POSITION TITLE: Registered Nurse - Operating Room

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

The provision of patient care through the nursing process framework (assessment, diagnosis, and patient outcomes) during the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative phases of surgical patients.

SUPERVISION: Reports to the Director of Nursing.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Graduate from an accredited nursing program
  • Valid Registered Nurse License
  • Current certifications in BLS and ACLS from the American Heart Association

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Possesses current, comprehensive professional knowledge and skills aligned with recognized nursing standards and departmental policies, including the Patient Bill of Rights and AAAHC regulations.
  • Evaluates physiological and psychosocial health status of patients.
  • Conducts pain assessments in accordance with policy.
  • Completes thorough patient histories.
  • Communicates relevant information to appropriate staff to ensure continuity of care.
  • Accurately documents patient information and signs records using the appropriate professional title.
  • Assesses patient understanding and expectations of care.
  • Identifies desired patient outcomes and establishes nursing diagnoses.
  • Sets mutually acceptable patient/family goals.
  • Develops and implements individualized Plan of Care.
  • Demonstrates problem-solving abilities and responsiveness to emergencies.
  • Adheres to legal and ethical guidelines (Nurse Practice Act, legal statutes, ANA code for Nurses, Policies and Procedures).
  • Exhibits accountability in nursing actions, demonstrating flexibility and safe judgment.
  • Continuously adjusts care plans based on patient/family data.
  • Demonstrates effective preoperative communication and reporting.
  • Ensures proper surgical case counting procedures and aseptic techniques.
  • Maintains efficient turnover times and verifies patient identification per policy.
  • Anticipates the needs of the surgeon during procedures.

  • Standing: 66-100%
  • Sitting: 0-33%
  • Walking: 66-100%
  • Lifting: Up to 50 lbs. as necessary
  • Carrying: Up to 25 lbs. as necessary
  • Pushing: Up to 400 lbs. on wheels with assistance as needed
  • Climbing: 1-5 flights of stairs as required
  • Pulling: As necessary during patient care
  • Bending: Required for picking items off the floor
  • Squatting: As necessary during care
  • Rotating: Shoulders as necessary
  • Kneeling: If necessary during patient care
  • Reaching: Overhead while providing care
  • General comments: Adequate visual and hearing senses are essential for patient care.
