JOB TITLE: Surgical Technologist

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Physician and/or Registered Nurse

GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES:

Surgical technologists, often referred to as scrubs or operating room technicians, play a vital role in assisting with surgical procedures under the guidance of surgeons, registered nurses, and other surgical staff. They are integral members of the surgical team, which typically includes surgeons, anesthesiologists, and circulating nurses.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/REQUIREMENTS:

  • Completion of an accredited surgical technologist program.
  • Certification in CPR and 0-2 years of relevant clinical experience.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Prepare and maintain surgical instruments and medical equipment for procedures.
  • Assist in setting up the operating room with sterile instruments, drapes, and solutions prior to surgery.
  • Adhere to hospital protocols and industry standards to ensure patient safety during pre-operative procedures.
  • Conduct pre-operative preparations, including skin cleansing and disinfecting incision sites.
  • Assemble both sterile and non-sterile equipment, ensuring proper functionality.
  • Prepare patients for surgery by performing necessary hygiene and positioning tasks.
  • Monitor patients' vital signs and assist the surgical team in donning sterile gowns and gloves.
  • Pass instruments and sterile supplies to the surgical team as needed.
  • Assist in holding retractors, cutting sutures, and counting sponges, needles, and instruments.
  • Operate sterilizers, surgical lights, and suction machines, as well as assist with diagnostic equipment.
  • After surgery, help transfer patients to recovery and clean the operating room.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS:

  • Ability to remain on feet for extended periods and assist patients with mobility.
  • Requires a combination of sitting and standing typical of an office environment.
  • Ability to focus for extended periods, up to four hours.
  • Effective verbal communication skills, both in person and via telephone.
  • Proficient in using a computer keyboard and viewing a monitor.

  • Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide age-appropriate care.
  • Understanding of growth and development principles across the lifespan.
  • Competence in the nursing process and effective communication.
  • Ability to maintain positive interpersonal relationships with patients and colleagues.

ENVIRONMENTAL/WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work in a busy office environment with frequent telephone interactions. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required.
