Overview
The Amazon Devices team is at the forefront of designing iconic consumer electronics, including the widely popular Amazon Echo, FireTV, Fire Tablets, Kindle, and Astro product lines.

Role Summary
We are seeking a driven individual contributor with a robust background in hardware or silicon engineering, exceptional communication abilities, and a strong desire to collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to shape system architecture across Amazon's device offerings.

Key Responsibilities
As a Senior System Architect, you will take charge of defining the system architecture for consumer products like Echo and FireTV, as well as a variety of innovative concepts that are yet to be disclosed.

  • Act as the primary technical liaison for product management and business teams, interpreting and clarifying the desired user experience and requirements for product concepts.
  • Define system architecture that aligns with product specifications while collaborating closely with business teams to understand and refine requirements and user experience trade-offs.
  • Drive critical design decisions, including edge-cloud compute partitioning, selection of device SoCs, and architecture for computing components (CPU, DSP, GPU, and ML accelerators).
  • Document architectural decisions in a comprehensive specification document to guide the engineering team.
  • Monitor market trends, engage with silicon and IP vendors, and establish roadmaps for next-generation compute IP and silicon platforms.
  • Delve into silicon design, define specifications for upcoming silicon platforms, and collaborate with suppliers for implementation.
  • Engage throughout the product development lifecycle, from initial concept through prototype development, validation, and production, ensuring product requirements are met.
  • Work closely with a diverse product team, including Program Management, Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, ML Science, Product Design, Industrial Design, Reliability, and Operations.
  • Validate architectural assumptions through hands-on engineering, profiling, and benchmarking.
  • Lead cross-functional groups to drive architecture decisions, leveraging both breadth and depth in areas of expertise such as computer architecture, SoC architecture, silicon design, and applied machine learning.

Daily Activities
In your role, you will:

  • Gather and translate business and functional product requirements into robust technical specifications and architectures.
  • Conduct feasibility analyses, including profiling and benchmarking new features on available silicon platforms.
  • Present architectural trade-offs and recommendations to senior management.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop and document architecture specifications for development teams.
  • Serve as a technical lead throughout the full development lifecycle, from planning and conception to design, implementation, testing, and maintenance.
  • Provide design and validation reviews for engineering peers, offering feedback on architecture, design issues, and performance.
  • Drive technology roadmaps in your areas of expertise to foster innovation and align with long-term product strategies.
  • Engage with silicon and component suppliers to influence their roadmaps to meet organizational needs.

Team Environment
The system architecture team is responsible for architecting a range of Amazon Lab126 products, including Echo, Fire Tablets, FireTV, Kindle eReaders, and IoT devices. The team manages the chipset and IP technology roadmap, driving strategies that enable reuse and scalability across Amazon devices. We are committed to attracting talented architects who can elevate our technical expertise and contribute to the architecture of next-generation devices and emerging concepts.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related fields.
  • 5+ years of industry experience.
  • Experience in driving architecture and design decisions in silicon, embedded software, or system architecture roles.
  • Background in SoC/Silicon engineering, computer architecture, machine learning, or embedded software.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's or PhD degree.
  • 7+ years of experience in embedded architecture design.
  • Strong understanding of heterogeneous SoC architectures.
  • Experience in architecture and design decisions for consumer electronics.
  • Expertise in at least two areas such as computer architecture, SoC architecture, silicon design, or applied machine learning.
  • Hands-on skills in software development for prototyping or hardware development.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to document and present technical designs clearly.
