Sunnyvale, California, United States Amazon Full time

About the Role
The Amazon Devices team is at the forefront of designing innovative consumer electronics, including renowned products like the Amazon Echo, FireTV, Fire Tablets, Kindle, and Astro. We are seeking a dedicated individual contributor with a robust background in video processing and picture quality algorithm development, coupled with experience in implementing these algorithms in silicon.

Key Responsibilities
As a Senior Picture Quality (PQ) Architect, you will play a pivotal role in defining the picture quality standards for display-centric consumer products such as TVs, Echo Show, and streaming media devices, alongside a variety of upcoming concepts. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Acting as the primary technical liaison for product management and business teams, clarifying the desired user experience and requirements for picture quality.
  • Establishing the picture quality benchmarks for each product and collaborating closely with the PQ tuning team to deliver unique and innovative picture quality.
  • Conducting thorough analyses of both internal and external solutions related to specific PQ features and proposing development plans for PQ algorithms to enhance existing or new features.
  • Making critical design decisions regarding the optimal blend of PQ features to support various use cases for specific products.
  • Documenting proposals and decisions in a comprehensive PQ architecture specification document to guide engineering and PQ tuning teams.
  • Monitoring market trends and standards in multimedia pipelines, video processing, and display processing, while interfacing directly with silicon and IP vendors to define organizational roadmaps for next-generation video picture quality IPs and standards.
  • Regularly presenting roadmap updates to senior leadership and engaging deeply with video pipelines and interfaces to define specifications for next-gen silicon platforms.

Collaboration and Innovation
Throughout the product development lifecycle—from initial concept to prototype development, validation, and production—you will remain engaged as the system technical lead, ensuring that product requirements are met. This role requires close collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, including Program Managers, Software Developers, Silicon and IP architects, and ML Scientists.

About the Team
The system architecture team is responsible for architecting a diverse range of Amazon Lab126 products, including Echo, Fire Tablets, FireTV, Kindle eReaders, Hearables, Wearables, and IoT devices. The team oversees chipset and IP technology roadmaps, driving strategies that enable reuse and scalability across Amazon devices.

Qualifications
To be successful in this role, candidates should possess:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • A minimum of 5 years of industry experience in video/display processing and PQ customization, with a proven track record of publications and patents.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to document and present technical designs clearly.
  • Experience with video codecs, video algorithm development, and multimedia IPs and architectures.
  • Proficiency in algorithm development and programming in MATLAB, C, C++, and Python.

Preferred Qualifications
Ideal candidates will also have:

  • Expertise in defining optimal combinations of TV PQ features for various use cases.
  • Over 8 years of experience in developing TV processing algorithms, including practical experience with HDR video processing.
  • Familiarity with objective methods for picture quality assessment and AI/ML approaches to video processing.
  • Experience in architecting multimedia systems with display, graphics, and video codec features.
  • Knowledge of heterogeneous SoC architectures.

Amazon is committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive workplace, ensuring equal opportunity for all candidates.
