Role Summary
We are seeking a proactive individual contributor with a robust background in hardware or silicon, exceptional communication abilities, and a strong desire to collaborate with a diverse team to shape system architecture across Amazon's product line.

Key Responsibilities
As a Senior System Architect, you will:

  • Define the system architecture for consumer products such as Echo and FireTV, as well as innovative concepts that are yet to be revealed.
  • Act as the primary technical liaison for product management and business teams, interpreting and clarifying the desired user experience and requirements.
  • Establish system architecture that aligns with product specifications, working closely with business teams to clarify requirements and user experience trade-offs.
  • Drive critical design decisions, including edge-cloud compute partitioning, device SoC selection, and compute architecture (CPU, DSP, GPU, and ML accelerators).
  • Document architectural decisions in a comprehensive specification document to guide the engineering team.
  • Monitor market trends, engage with silicon and IP vendors, and outline roadmaps for next-generation compute IP and silicon platforms.
  • Delve into silicon design, specifying requirements for next-gen silicon platforms and collaborating with suppliers for implementation.
  • Engage throughout the product development lifecycle, from initial concept through prototype development, validation, and production, ensuring product requirements are met.
  • Collaborate closely with a multidisciplinary product team, including Program Management, Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, ML Science, Product Design, Industrial Design, Reliability, and Operations.
  • Utilize hands-on engineering skills to validate architectural assumptions through profiling and benchmarking.
  • Lead cross-functional groups to drive architecture decisions, leveraging both breadth and depth in areas such as computer architecture, SoC architecture, silicon design, and applied machine learning.

Daily Activities
Your daily tasks will include:

  • Gathering and translating business and functional product requirements into robust, scalable technical specifications and architectures.
  • Conducting feasibility analyses, including profiling and benchmarking new features on available silicon platforms.
  • Presenting architecture trade-offs and recommendations to senior management.
  • Collaborating with cross-functional teams to develop and document architecture specifications for development teams.
  • Serving as a technical lead throughout the entire development lifecycle, from scoping and planning to design, implementation, testing, and maintenance.
  • Providing design and validation reviews for fellow engineers, offering feedback on architecture and design issues.
  • Driving technology roadmaps in your areas of expertise to foster innovation and align with long-term product goals.
  • Working closely with silicon and component suppliers to influence their roadmaps in alignment with organizational needs.

Team Overview
The system architecture team is responsible for architecting a range of Amazon Lab126 products, including Echo, Fire Tablets, FireTV, Kindle eReaders, Hearables, Wearables, and IoT devices. The team manages the chipset and IP technology roadmap, driving strategies that enable reuse and scalability across Amazon devices. We seek talented architects who can enhance our technical expertise and contribute to the development of next-generation devices and emerging concepts.

Qualifications
Basic:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related fields.
  • 5+ years of industry experience.
  • Experience in driving architecture and design decisions in silicon, embedded software, or system architecture.
  • Background in SoC/Silicon engineering, computer architecture, machine learning, or embedded software.

Preferred:

  • Master's or PhD degree.
  • 7+ years of experience with embedded architecture design.
  • Strong understanding of heterogeneous SoC architectures.
  • Experience in architecture and design decisions for consumer electronics devices.
  • Expertise in at least two of the following areas: computer architecture, SoC architecture, silicon design, graphics and multimedia, embedded Linux, video encoders/decoders, applied machine learning, ML accelerators, audio, wireless, sensors, power management, system performance benchmarking.
  • Hands-on skills in software development for prototyping or hardware development.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to document and present technical designs clearly.
