POSITION SUMMARY
The Instrument Processing Specialist plays a crucial role in managing the inventory, distribution, and sterilization of medical instruments and equipment. This position is responsible for ensuring the integrity of sterile products and accurately preparing case carts based on established preferences.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
– Additional tasks may be assigned as needed.
· Adhere to departmental protocols and procedures, serving as a mentor for new staff.
· Utilize appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) in accordance with safety guidelines.
· Operate decontamination equipment effectively, ensuring proper loading and documentation.
· Employ ultrasonic cleaning methods and utilize compressed air for instrument preparation.
· Manage the reception of contaminated instruments, performing thorough cleaning and disassembly as required.
· Demonstrate knowledge of instrument sets across various specialties, ensuring accurate sorting and assembly.
· Identify instruments that require special handling due to sensitivity to heat or fluids.
· Follow all manufacturer guidelines for instrument management and sterilization.
· Assemble instrument sets and serve as a resource for staff regarding specialty trays.
· Maintain accurate records using count sheets for set assembly.
· Prepare instruments for all specialties, employing proper wrapping and packaging techniques to ensure sterility.
· Understand the operation and maintenance of various sterilization equipment, including steam and gas sterilizers.
· Comprehend sterilization parameters and ensure compliance with documentation standards.
· Utilize biological indicators for quality control and validation of sterilization processes.
· Stay informed about physician preferences and manage supply reconciliation effectively.
· Possess a solid understanding of medical terminology and surgical procedures across specialties.
· Take initiative in supporting team members, preparing shift reports, and identifying opportunities for operational efficiency.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
· High School diploma or GED is required.
· Completion of a recognized Surgical Tech or Sterile Processing Technician training program is preferred.
OR
· Certification as a Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician (CSPDT) or Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) is required.
OR
· A minimum of two years of relevant experience in a sterile processing environment, with the expectation of obtaining certification within one year of employment.
· Proficiency in computer applications, including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Windows.
