POSITION SUMMARY

The Lead Sterile Processing Technician is responsible for overseeing the management of inventory, receiving, and the sterile processing of surgical instruments and equipment. This role includes ensuring the proper maintenance of sterile products and accurately preparing case carts based on surgical preferences.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

– Additional duties may be assigned.

· Scrubbing surgical cases in the operating room as required by the surgical schedule.

· Maintaining up-to-date knowledge of surgical procedures, including necessary supplies and equipment.

· Adhering to departmental policies and serving as a mentor for staff, ensuring compliance with all regulatory standards.

· Managing supply orders, maintaining inventory levels, and working to minimize costs.

· Ensuring the correct use of personal protective equipment (PPE) within the department.

· Prioritizing tasks for team members, assigning work, and monitoring completion.

· Scheduling and operating sterilization equipment, ensuring proper loading and documentation.

· Receiving and cleaning contaminated instruments, including disassembly and manual cleaning.

· Identifying instruments that require special handling due to sensitivity to heat or fluids.

· Coordinating the sterilization of loaner instruments for specialized procedures.

· Assembling instrument trays and serving as a resource for staff regarding specialty trays.

· Maintaining an accurate computerized inventory of instrument trays and making necessary updates.

· Preparing instruments for various specialties and understanding packaging methods.

· Knowledgeable about sterilization processes and parameters, ensuring compliance with standards.

· Troubleshooting equipment issues during procedures and recommending alternatives as needed.

· Understanding biological indicators and their role in quality control for sterilization.

· Reviewing surgical schedules and aligning preference cards accordingly.

· Anticipating and coordinating the needs for specialty and loaner equipment based on physician preferences.

· Maintaining familiarity with medical terminology and surgical procedures across specialties.

· Demonstrating initiative in assisting colleagues, preparing reports, supervising staff, and managing instrument orders effectively.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

· High School diploma or GED required.

· At least 2 years of experience in a sterile processing environment.

· Certification as a Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician (CSPDT) or Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) is required.

· Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
