POSITION SUMMARY

The Lead Sterile Processing Technician is accountable for the management of inventory, receiving, and the sterile processing of surgical instruments and equipment. This role oversees the case care room operations, ensuring the maintenance of sterile products and the accurate preparation of case carts based on physician preferences.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

– Additional duties may be assigned.

· Scrubbing surgical cases in the operating room as required by the surgical schedule.

· Maintaining up-to-date knowledge of surgical procedures, including necessary supplies, equipment, and techniques.

· Adhering to departmental policies and procedures, serving as a mentor for staff, and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards.

· Managing supply orders, maintaining appropriate inventory levels, and working to minimize costs.

· Ensuring the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) relevant to the department.

· Setting priorities for team members, delegating tasks, and ensuring timely completion of responsibilities.

· Scheduling and overseeing the maintenance of sterilization equipment, ensuring proper operation and documentation.

· Receiving and processing contaminated instruments, including disassembly, cleaning, and inspection.

· Coordinating the sterilization of loaner instruments for various specialties.

· Assembling surgical instrument trays and serving as a resource for staff regarding specialty tray requirements.

· Maintaining an accurate computerized inventory of instrument trays and updating as necessary.

· Understanding sterilization methods and parameters, ensuring compliance with established protocols.

· Troubleshooting equipment issues during surgical procedures and recommending alternatives as needed.

· Monitoring and validating the effectiveness of sterilization processes through biological indicators.

· Reviewing surgical schedules and reconciling preference cards to ensure all necessary instruments are available.

· Anticipating and coordinating the needs for specialty and loaner equipment based on physician preferences.

· Demonstrating knowledge of medical terminology and surgical case types across specialties.

· Taking initiative to assist colleagues, preparing end-of-shift reports, supervising staff, and ordering new instruments as required to maintain departmental efficiency.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

· High School diploma or GED is required.

· A minimum of 2 years of experience in a sterile processing environment is required.

· Certification as a Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician (CSPDT) or Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) is mandatory.

· Proficiency in computer applications, including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Windows.
