Senior Counsel for North America Client Agreements

This role is designed for an in-house legal professional within Visa's Legal and Ethics & Compliance division, contributing to the legal team that supports the North America Sales and Client divisions. In a competitive and evolving payments landscape, these teams play a vital role in advancing Visa's strategic objectives. As a member of this team, you will offer insightful and practical legal advice to essential teams at Visa to facilitate commercial contracts with Visa's key clients.

Key Responsibilities:

Your primary duties will encompass:

  • Drafting and negotiating intricate business agreements, including incentive, branding, and strategic partnership contracts with traditional payment system participants such as issuers, merchants, processors, and emerging payment system players like fintechs, neobanks, and cryptocurrency wallets.
  • Engaging in extensive business interactions with Visa's external clientele, including financial institutions, processors, merchants, and fintech companies.
  • Creating, updating, and managing standard agreement templates to enhance the efficiency of the contract administration process.
  • Providing legal support to Visa's account executives who oversee global client relationships.
  • Collaborating closely with internal subject matter experts and regional legal advisors.

This position operates in a hybrid model, allowing employees to alternate between remote work and office presence. Employees in hybrid roles are expected to be in the office 2-3 designated days per week, based on leadership/site requirements, with a general expectation of being in the office 50% or more of the time according to business needs.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 5 or more years of relevant experience with a Bachelor's Degree, or at least 2 years of experience with an Advanced Degree (e.g., Masters, MBA, JD, MD), or no experience with a PhD.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 6 or more years of experience with a Bachelor's Degree, or 4 or more years of relevant experience with an Advanced Degree, or up to 3 years of relevant experience with a PhD.
  • Must be a member in good standing and eligible to practice law in at least one jurisdiction in the United States.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with a diverse team to establish effective working relationships with internal clients at all levels.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and experience working with cross-functional and/or cross-regional teams.
  • Excellent academic credentials.
  • Outstanding analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills, including the capacity to translate complex legal concepts into business-oriented advice.
  • Experience in drafting, negotiating, or litigating complex commercial agreements.
  • Self-motivated individual capable of working independently, effectively, and collaboratively within a small legal team.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage a substantial number of matters successfully.
  • Developed business acumen, with the capability to comprehend the company's business interests and foresee potential issues in a fast-paced environment.
  • Preferred background knowledge in the payment services industry, credit and debit processing sectors, legal and regulatory frameworks governing credit and debit cards, intellectual property law, and antitrust and competition law.
  • Practical and proactive problem-solver, composed under pressure, with a positive attitude and a sense of humor.

Work Hours: Varies based on departmental needs.

Travel Requirements: This position may require travel 5-10% of the time.

Mental/Physical Requirements: This role will be performed in an office environment, requiring the incumbent to sit and stand at a desk, communicate in person and via telephone, and frequently operate standard office equipment such as telephones and computers.

U.S. APPLICANTS ONLY: The estimated salary range for this position is between $165,400.00 and $215,000.00 USD per year, which may include potential sales incentive payments (if applicable). Salary may vary based on job-related factors such as knowledge, skills, experience, and location. Additionally, this position may be eligible for bonuses and equity. Visa offers a comprehensive benefits package for which this position may qualify, including Medical, Dental, Vision, 401(k), FSA/HSA, Life Insurance, Paid Time Off, and a Wellness Program.
