Position Overview:

The Security Specialist II is responsible for ensuring a secure and safe environment for patients, visitors, medical staff, and volunteers, enabling the delivery of quality services while minimizing threats to personal safety and property. This role involves conducting regular patrols and monitoring of facility grounds, observing and reporting any suspicious or unauthorized activities, as well as unsafe conditions. Responsibilities also include managing access control, overseeing key distribution, and responding to emergencies. The specialist provides assistance and security services to staff, physicians, patients, and visitors, including monitoring and managing potentially violent situations. Additionally, the role involves investigating incidents and acting as a liaison between facility staff and local law enforcement.

Key Responsibilities:

FACILITY SECURITY:

  • Conducts thorough interior and exterior patrols to deter fire, theft, and vandalism, ensuring all entry points are secure.
  • Manages access to facility doors and entrances according to established protocols.
  • Inspects elevators and fire escape routes, reporting any discrepancies to maintenance personnel.
  • Monitors surveillance systems and inspects premises to prevent losses, documenting any irregularities.
  • Observes behavior during patrols to prevent incidents and ensure a safe environment.
  • Responds promptly to emergency codes, fire drills, and alarms.
  • Provides security training and may lead fire drills in collaboration with the Safety Department.
EMERGENCY RESPONSE:
  • Addresses all emergency calls to manage situations involving disorderly conduct, potential abductions, bomb threats, evacuations, and hazardous materials.
  • Restrains individuals when necessary and coordinates with local authorities for further action.
  • Documents all observations and incidents in detail.
  • Collaborates with local law enforcement and emergency services as required.
INCIDENT DOCUMENTATION:
  • Reports unusual occurrences to the Lead Security Officer/Manager and completes Security Incident Reports accurately.
  • Maintains clear and legible records of incidents, traffic, and inspections.
CUSTOMER SERVICE:
  • Provides assistance and information to patients, visitors, and staff to ensure safety and positive public relations.
  • Acts as the primary contact for security-related inquiries.
  • Assists with lost and found inquiries.
  • Answers general questions regarding security policies and procedures.
  • Identifies and assists individuals with special needs.
SECURITY FOR ACUTE FACILITIES:
  • Maintains a visible security presence in the Emergency Department for patients and staff.
  • Facilitates the admission of individuals on a 5150 hold from law enforcement, ensuring their stability before releasing officers.
  • Ensures the safety of all individuals within the facility.
  • Utilizes verbal intervention techniques primarily, with physical restraint as a last resort.
EDUCATION:
  • High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED) required.
CERTIFICATION & LICENSURE:
  • Proprietary Private Security Officer certification within 30 days of employment.
  • Valid Class C Driver's License required.
EXPERIENCE:
  • Minimum of one year of relevant experience preferred.
SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:
  • Comprehensive understanding of security officer responsibilities, emphasizing the judgment and diplomacy needed in a healthcare setting.
  • Critical thinking and decisive judgment skills are essential.
  • Ability to compose incident reports and interpret various forms of communication.
  • Proficient in basic arithmetic and problem-solving in diverse situations.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions effectively.
