Job Title: Upper School Substitute Teacher

Job Summary:

The Upper School Substitute Teacher is a temporary position that provides continuity of instruction for students in Grades 9-12 when a teacher is absent. The successful candidate will be hired on a daily basis or for a limited term.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Teaching: Teach 5 sections of an academic subject, ensuring that instruction is engaging, interactive, and aligned with the school's curriculum.
  • Leadership: Lead a club during the dedicated club period, fostering a positive and inclusive environment for students.
  • Support Services: Proctor a study hall (if assigned), providing guidance and support to students as needed.
  • Advisory: Advise 12-18 students during the dedicated advisory period, helping them set and achieve academic and personal goals.
  • Classroom Management: Manage the classroom with safety and security as the top priority, ensuring that students feel comfortable and supported.
  • Additional Tasks: Complete non-academic tasks as necessary, such as break duty, lunch duty, carpool, and other responsibilities as assigned by the Head of School.

Position Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree: A bachelor's degree in the subject area or a related field is preferred.
  • Classroom Experience: Classroom experience is preferred, with a demonstrated ability to teach and engage students.
  • Independent School Experience: Understanding or experience in independent schools is preferred, with a demonstrated ability to work in a diverse and inclusive environment.

Working Conditions:

The Upper School Substitute Teacher will work in a fast-paced and dynamic environment, supervising students both indoors and outdoors. Faculty are required to participate in regular safety drills, learn CPR, learn how to apply a tourniquet, provide basic first aid, administer epi-pens when needed, and be able to support other student-specific health-related needs. Some weekend, evening, or early morning work may be required from time to time.

Physical Requirements:

The Upper School Substitute Teacher must be able to provide adequate supervision indoors and outdoors, ensuring the safety of students during drills and emergencies. The position may require prolonged periods of sitting at a desk, standing to teach, and working on a computer. Teachers must be able to lift up to 15 pounds and traverse the classroom and adjust one's tone and height, by bending or leaning, in order to teach each child.
