Position: Surface Finishing Technician
Under the close guidance of the finishing lead and department supervisor, the Surface Finishing Technician is responsible for executing various grit blasting, water blasting, and grinding operations to eliminate casting imperfections and achieve a refined surface finish on welded castings.

Work Schedule: Monday to Friday, 2:30 PM to 11:00 PM.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Adhere to established process control and quality standards for finishing tasks.
  • Interpret and follow shop traveler instructions accurately.
  • Operate both manual and automated grit blasting equipment, as well as handheld pneumatic and bench grinding tools.
  • Utilize sandblast and waterblast machinery effectively.
  • Employ bench grinding machines for surface preparation.
  • Select the appropriate tools for basic and routine surface finishing, including scraping and deburring, to eliminate visible casting defects.
  • Manipulate tools or components to remove excess metal, performing basic dimensional inspections as needed.
  • Prepare areas with casting defects for welding repairs by creating the necessary weld repair cavities.
  • Exercise caution in handling and operating equipment to prevent surface damage, cracking, or overstressing of components, ensuring compliance with required finish and tolerances.
  • Identify and report defective parts or unusual conditions to the lead or supervisor.
  • Execute assigned tasks within training and capability to meet daily production goals.
  • Follow all safety protocols and wear personal protective equipment (PPE) as outlined in the Hazard Assessment Form.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area and equipment.
  • Perform additional tasks as directed.
  • Must be capable of lifting up to 35 lbs.

Required Skills:
  • Effective communication skills in English, both verbal and written; ability to read, interpret, and follow specifications on technique cards, code sheets, blueprints, and drawings.
  • Basic mathematical skills for calculations.
  • Ability to work independently and resolve issues.
  • Capability to work in challenging conditions, including exposure to noise, dust, chemicals, and temperature extremes for extended periods.
  • Judgment required to plan, execute, and make decisions within standard procedures.
  • Manual dexterity and visual attention necessary for operating manual grinding tools.
  • Ability to wear PPE for finishing and grinding tasks.

Education & Experience:
  • High school diploma or GED.
