Position Overview: The Patient Processing Clerk PRN is responsible for performing a variety of receptionist, registration, and administrative tasks associated with patient admissions, both direct and scheduled.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Ensure the collection and accurate entry of all necessary demographic, billing, and clinical information into the registration system promptly.
  2. Provide patients and their families with forms, documents, and educational materials, explaining their significance.
  3. Engage with patients or their caregivers prior to or following admission to exchange essential information and documentation, addressing any concerns or inquiries.
  4. Communicate effectively with the admitting physician's office, nursing staff, and other relevant personnel to facilitate the admission process.
  5. Verify insurance benefits and secure necessary precertifications or authorizations, as well as manage required payments, including co-pays and deductibles.
  6. Adhere to established policies, procedures, and safety standards while maintaining confidentiality of sensitive information.
  7. Operate the switchboard and paging system, handling all calls and requests with courtesy.
  8. Maintain and provide patients with necessary paperwork in compliance with legislative regulations and hospital policies.
  9. Document all intake information for initial occupational therapy, physical therapy, and speech therapy visits.
  10. Represent the organization by welcoming patients and visitors in various registration areas, including the emergency department.
  11. Exhibit professionalism and maintain good guest relations at all times.
  12. Cross-train within the department to efficiently manage functions related to pre-admission, admission, outpatient registration, emergency room registration, and bed control.
  13. Review admissions and outpatient data for accuracy and completeness.
  14. Assign appropriate room and service codes in collaboration with nursing staff and physician orders, ensuring proper discharges.
  15. Facilitate the collection of patient signatures on all necessary admission forms and communicate any incomplete documentation to nursing staff.
  16. Maintain accurate records and documentation related to patient care.
  17. Handle financial transactions, including collecting payments, issuing receipts, and managing account information.
  18. Ensure a clean and organized work environment to maximize efficiency and minimize infection risks.
  19. Notify relevant personnel regarding private pay patients and those covered by Medicaid, Medicare, or other contracts to ensure proper authorizations and financial arrangements.
  20. Regularly file patient billing information to keep billing records current.
  21. Update computer entries as required.
  22. Manage stock items effectively.
  23. Report any repair issues to IT or Maintenance as necessary.
  24. Participate in staff meetings, contributing positively to discussions and problem-solving efforts.
  25. Maintain confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA regulations.
  26. Foster a culture of service excellence throughout the organization.
  27. Actively seek opportunities for continuous improvement and engage in professional development.
  28. Perform additional related duties as assigned.
  29. Complete annual educational requirements as mandated.
  30. Understand and comply with the organization's compliance standards as outlined in relevant policies.

Qualifications:

Minimum Education: High school diploma or equivalent is required.

Required Skills: Critical thinking, decisive judgment, and the ability to work independently in a high-pressure environment are essential.

Minimum Work Experience: A minimum of 2 years of experience as an admitting clerk is required.
