We are seeking a highly organized and detail-oriented Patient Processing Clerk PRN to join our team at UP Health System - Bell. As a Patient Processing Clerk PRN, you will be responsible for performing a variety of administrative tasks related to patient admissions, registration, and scheduling.
Key Responsibilities- Perform receptionist, registration, and clerical duties associated with direct and scheduled patient admissions.
- Ensure that all necessary demographic, billing, and clinical information is obtained and entered in the registration system with timeliness and accuracy.
- Distribute and explain forms, documents, and educational handouts to patients or family members.
- Meet with patient or patient's caregiver before or after admission to exchange necessary information and documentation.
- Communicate with admitting physician's office, nursing unit staff, and/or other appropriate personnel regarding admission to exchange necessary information and determine placement.
- Verify insurance benefits and obtain precertification/authorization as necessary.
- Determine and accept required payments, including co-pays and deductibles, or refer to financial counselors for follow up.
- Follow established policies and procedures, objectives, safety standards, and sensitivity to confidential information.
- Operate switchboard and paging system and route all calls and requests courteously.
- Monitor alarm system according to hospital policy.
- Maintain, utilize, and provide patients with necessary paperwork per legislative regulation and Hospital policy.
- Obtain and document all intake information on all patients for initial OT/PT/Speech visits.
- Represent Bell Hospital in welcoming all patients and/or visitors in admitting, outpatient registration, ancillary registration areas, and the emergency department.
- Conduct oneself in a manner appropriate to the maintenance of good guest relations.
- Cross-train within the department and business office to effectively handle the functions of pre-admission, admission, outpatient registration, emergency room registration, and bed control.
- Review admissions, outpatients, and emergency room face sheets and data collected for thoroughness and accuracy of patient information.
- Assign appropriate rooms and hospital services codes in conjunction with nursing staff and physician orders along with proper discharges of all patient types.
- Witness and obtain patient signatures on all forms required for admission registration.
- Communicate with nursing staff any incomplete paperwork/signature.
- Maintain records and paperwork for documentation for patient care as required.
- Collect appropriate money, write receipts, and maintain account information.
- Deposit money and valuables from patients in accordance with hospital practice.
- Maintain a well-organized and clean environment to work at maximum efficiency and prevent the transmission of infection and disease.
- Alert necessary personnel of private pay patients, Medicaid, Medicare, and other contractually governed patients to insure proper authorizations are obtained and financial arrangements are made.
- File patient billing information in the department regularly to maintain current billing files.
- Update computer entry information.
- Maintain all items for stock.
- Report repair issues to IT or Maintenance as appropriate.
- Participate in staff meetings, provide input, and ideas in a positive and problem-solving manner.
- Maintain confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA regulations.
- Support the culture of service excellence throughout the organization.
- Actively seek ways to demonstrate a commitment to continuous improvement and participate in professional development opportunities.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Complete annual educational requirements.
- Understand and adhere to Bell's compliance standards as they appear in Bell's Corporate Compliance Policy, Code of Conduct, and Conflict of Interest Policy.
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment, and the ability to work with minimal supervision
- Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action
- Minimum 2 years experience as an admitting clerk
This position is a Per Diem/PRN opportunity, rotating weekends and various shifts.
