Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Building Construction Trades Inspector to join our team at the City of Jacksonville. As a Senior Building Construction Trades Inspector, you will be responsible for inspecting construction projects and examining residential, commercial, and industrial construction drawings, plans, and other specifications for compliance with applicable construction codes and specifications.

Key Responsibilities
  • Inspect construction projects and examine residential, commercial, and industrial construction drawings, plans, and other specifications for compliance with applicable construction codes and specifications.
  • Halts construction project if unsafe or non-conforming conditions exist.
  • Issues building code citations and presents cases before regulatory agencies.
  • Examines construction designs, plans, and blueprints for compliance with codes and regulations.
  • Operates a computer using word processing, spreadsheet, database, permitting, and inspection software.
  • Resolves complaints and instructs homeowners, builders, and contractors on applicable codes and corrections.
  • Prepares correspondence to direct correction of code violations.
  • Prepares records, files, and reports.
  • Develops and conducts public information programs.
  • Trains and monitors the work of inspectors for system improvements.
  • Reviews inspection methods and techniques and recommends improvements for process efficiency and customer satisfaction.
  • Recommends and develops standard operating procedures.
  • Conducts quality assurance inspections of consultants' work.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in the City of Jacksonville's competencies.
Requirements
  • A six-year combination of education and/or experience at the technical or professional level in the construction or inspection of buildings.
  • A valid driver's license is required prior to appointment and must be maintained during employment in this class.
  • Must qualify for, obtain, and maintain during employment in this class a City of Jacksonville Certification as a Public Driver.
  • A standard State of Florida Certificate as a Building Inspector and a standard State of Florida Certificate as a Plans Examiner are required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of applicable codes, standards, and regulations.
  • Knowledge of the theories, principles, and practices, and terminology used in building design and construction.
  • Knowledge of hand-held computer systems.
  • Knowledge of inspection processes.
  • Knowledge of process management theories and techniques.
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations, including basic geometry.
  • Ability to develop viable process improvements.
  • Ability to develop and conduct training and public information programs.
  • Ability to train and monitor the work of others.
  • Ability to inspect buildings, land, and structures.
  • Ability to detect and locate defective workmanship and materials.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction designs, plans, and blueprints.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, orally and in writing, including making presentations before large groups.
