We are seeking a highly skilled Mechanical Trades Inspector to join our team at the City of Jacksonville. As a Mechanical Trades Inspector, you will play a critical role in ensuring compliance with applicable building codes and construction practices.
Key Responsibilities- Inspect construction projects to ensure compliance with applicable codes and construction practices.
- Enter inspection and investigation results into a computer and prepare written notes for the construction site.
- Halt construction projects if they are not in compliance.
- Consult with and instruct contractors on applicable codes and corrective action.
- Read construction drawings and plans.
- Issue building code citations and present cases before regulatory agencies.
- Investigate reported code violations and secure evidence in cases of violation.
- Operate a computer using inspection software.
- Operate a motor vehicle.
- Knowledge of applicable codes, standards, and regulations.
- Knowledge of techniques, methods, procedures, and terminology used in building construction.
- Ability to perform mathematical calculations, including basic geometry.
- Ability to inspect buildings, land, and structures.
- Ability to detect and locate defective workmanship and materials.
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and plans.
- Ability to communicate effectively in English, orally and in writing.
- Ability to stand and walk for long periods of time, including sitting, climbing, and occasional lifting of objects weighing up to 40 pounds.
- Ability to operate standard office equipment, such as a telephone and laptop computer, utilizing permit tracking and email software.
- Ability to operate a motor vehicle.
- 5 years of education and/or experience at a technical or professional level in the construction trade to which the position is assigned, which must include at least one year of experience.
- May be required to furnish and operate an automobile in good condition for use in City business, for which mileage compensation will be paid.
The requirements are dependent upon the activity to which the position is assigned, as follows:
- Mechanical Inspection:
- If not already certified by the State of Florida as a Mechanical Inspector, must process an application for a provisional State of Florida Certificate as a Building Inspector within one (1) month of appointment.
- Must possess or obtain within six (6) months of appointment a provisional State of Florida Certificate as a Mechanical Inspector.
- Must possess or obtain within twelve (12) months of receiving provisional certification, a State of Florida Certificate as a Mechanical Inspector.
- Once the provisional certification is obtained, must maintain same or standard certification during employment in this class.
- Must possess a City of Jacksonville Journeyman or Master Mechanic or be a State of Florida licensed Mechanical Contractor or a Certified Air Conditioning Contractor and maintain same during employment in this class.
- A valid driver's license is required prior to appointment and must be maintained during employment in this class.
- Must qualify for prior to appointment, obtain, and maintain during employment in this class a City of Jacksonville Certification as a Public Driver.
- The probationary period for this classification is six (6) months.
- This classification performs safety-sensitive functions and is subject to pre-employment, random, and other drug/alcohol testing programs as set forth in the City of Jacksonville's Drug Free Workplace Policy.
