The Planning and Development Department is currently looking for three (3) Senior Building Plan Reviewers.

As an employee of the City of Jacksonville, you will enjoy 12 paid holidays and a personal leave day. This position involves administrative responsibilities in reviewing construction plans for residential, commercial, and industrial projects to ensure compliance with relevant building codes. The role requires a solid understanding of building construction codes, architectural and structural drafting techniques, and the methods and procedures necessary to evaluate proposed construction designs. Effective communication skills are essential for recommending adjustments to non-compliant construction plans. The work is standardized, governed by diverse procedures and specialized standards that require sound judgment. The position is primarily office-based, utilizing standard office equipment and measuring devices, with minimal physical demands. Work is conducted under limited supervision, with assignments adhering to established practices and procedures, subject to quality review.

Key Responsibilities
  • Examine and assess residential, commercial, and industrial construction drawings and specifications for adherence to building codes.
  • Calculate and confirm engineering designs and permit fees.
  • Notify applicants of structural discrepancies and advise on necessary corrections.
  • Respond to inquiries, providing guidance on building code compliance.
  • Exhibit proficiency in the City of Jacksonville Competencies.
  • Perform related duties as required.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Familiarity with building construction codes and standard specifications, along with architectural and structural drafting techniques.
  • Understanding of customer service principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of construction designs, plans, blueprints, and permits.
  • Awareness of applicable building construction and zoning code requirements.
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations accurately.
  • Capability to read and interpret construction drawings, diagrams, and plans.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Professional and courteous interaction with internal and external customers.
Qualifications
  • A minimum of five years of combined education, training, or experience at a technical or professional level in construction and inspection, including at least one year of relevant experience.
Licensing/Certification
  • Certification as a Building Plans Examiner by the State of Florida, along with a standard State of Florida Building Inspector Certificate.
  • An active valid Florida Architect License may be accepted in lieu of the FL Plans Examiner License and the FL Standard Building Inspector Certification.
Other Requirements
  • The probationary period for this classification is six months.
