Job Description

Job Summary:

The City of Jacksonville is seeking a highly skilled Building Plans Examiner to join our team in the Planning and Development Department. As a Building Plans Examiner, you will be responsible for examining construction plans for residential, commercial, and industrial buildings to ensure compliance with applicable building codes.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Review and analyze construction drawings, plans, and specifications for compliance with building codes
  • Calculate and verify engineering designs and permit fees
  • Inform applicants of structural discrepancies and advise them of corrections
  • Answer inquiries to assist and provide guidance on building code compliance
  • Demonstrate proficiency in the City of Jacksonville Competencies
  • Perform related work as required

Requirements:

  • Five-year combination of education, training, or experience at the technical or professional level in construction and inspection, including at least one year of experience
  • Knowledge of building construction codes and standard specifications, architectural and structural drafting techniques, and structural computation methods, procedures, and terminology
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations and read and interpret construction drawings, diagrams, and plans
  • Ability to communicate effectively

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Standard State of Florida Certificate as a Building Inspector, a standard State of Florida Certificate as a Plans Examiner, or a Florida Architect License in lieu of a Florida Plans Examiner License and the Florida Building Inspector Certification
