Job Summary

The Assistant Director of Human Resources and Operations will be a key member of our team, responsible for managing human resources functions, operations, and function-specific projects for our office. Reporting to the Executive Director, Equity, Civil Rights and Title IX, you will provide full-cycle HR support for team members and assist with projects and initiatives impacting the university and our team.

Responsibilities
  • Direct and coordinate the human resource needs of the department, coordinating with other subject matter experts within partnering offices.
  • Perform human resource support functions from recruitment to retirement, including recruitment, posting, and onboarding functions, HR policy interpretation, employee relations, and team development.
  • Develop and administer human resource policies and processes in the areas of recruiting and hiring, onboarding, classification, compensation, performance management, work planning, and professional development.
  • Ensure consistent application of relevant policies and procedures and maintain ongoing communication of best practices.
  • Consult with departmental leadership, managers, and staff on sensitive personnel matters, interpreting policies and procedures for staff.
  • Develop and maintain a positive environment by collaborating with our managers and staff to provide guidance, interpretation, and application of HR policies, practices, and programs.
  • Advise on university policies, procedures, and best practices, including potential legal or ethical risks, workplace diversity and inclusion, harassment and discrimination, and conflict of interest.
  • Develop, implement, and continually improve organizational frameworks that enhance efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Streamline operational processes, policies, and procedures.
  • Build an atmosphere of coordination, clear understanding of our vision, defined timelines, metrics, and deliverables.
  • Oversee operational projects such as facilities and office space.
  • Help administer the budget and provide general support with financial management.
  • Partner with the leadership team to facilitate meetings, track processes, and collaborate with directors on priorities.
  • Assist with ad hoc or emerging matters and troubleshoot with partners across U-M campuses.
  • Use project management and prioritization skills to lead project teams for function-specific work.
  • Translate strategic and tactical initiatives into operational plans.
  • Anticipate, identify, and troubleshoot issues of concern or significance.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree required or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 7+ years of experience in roles involving HR operations, employee relations, talent management, and related projects.
  • Knowledge and applied experience in the full cycle talent management function.
  • Applied experience using project management best practices.
  • Previous experience working with teams with a focus on goal planning, resource management, and operational oversight.
  • General knowledge of Equity, Civil Rights, and Title IX matters.
  • Intermediate-level proficiency with HR systems and project management tools.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to promoting a diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment for all members of our community.
  • Interest in working in a decentralized organization with diverse teams.
Work Mode

This position is eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment.
