Arlington, Virginia, United States Leidos Holding Full time

The Leidos Innovation Center (LInC) Quantum Technologies Team is seeking a Photonics Research Scientist with expertise in quantum technologies and quantum information science, particularly in the realms of quantum optics and integrated photonics. While familiarity with photonic computing hardware may be advantageous, this role is NOT intended for quantum computing pursuits. This position offers a unique opportunity to leverage your expertise in expanding Leidos' quantum technologies portfolio through various contract and internal R&D initiatives, benchmarking, and operational prototypes. As a Photonics Research Scientist, you will engage in the comprehensive research and development lifecycle of integrated photonics and free-space optical systems aimed at exploring quantum-enabled remote sensing and communication applications. Ideal candidates should be committed to applied research and development, possessing robust experimental and hardware skills, and be enthusiastic about advancing technologies from concept to prototype. We are looking for intermediate-level candidates (Master's/PhD graduates or those with 2 to 5 years of relevant experience).

Key Responsibilities
  • Design, simulate, construct, characterize, and evaluate optics/optoelectronics/photonics experiments across diverse systems and platforms for pioneering devices in quantum communication, sensing, and precision positioning, navigation, and timing.
  • Conduct laboratory and field experiments to validate quantum experimental theories as feasible products in relevant domains, and benchmark outcomes within the field.
  • Author proposals, publish research papers, participate in conferences, and provide briefings to both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with team members, engineers, and scientists across various disciplines to harness quantum technologies for achieving organizational objectives.
Essential Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in physics, applied physics, engineering, or related disciplines.
  • Research experience and experimental proficiency in areas such as quantum optics, integrated photonics, quantum entanglement, photonics, and quantum communications.
  • Proficiency in photonic design simulation using tools like Lumerical, Tidy3D, or COMSOL, as well as RF circuit simulation tools such as Sonnet or Microwave Office.
  • Experience in layout design, tapeout, and design rule verification.
  • Knowledge in the packaging of photonic integrated circuits, including fiber and electrical connections, analog and digital circuits, and PCB design.
  • Familiarity with optics laboratory design, setup, operation, and photonic chip characterization.
  • Proven ability to develop innovative solutions based on relevant research findings from diverse sources.
  • Experience in building and benchmarking hardware and software prototypes, including metrics development and theoretical/analytical/computational skills.
  • Strong technical writing capabilities with experience in crafting advanced technical proposals.
  • US Citizenship with the ability to obtain and maintain a US government security clearance.
  • A strong desire to learn new technologies and adaptability to switch between projects swiftly.
  • Proficiency in standard programming languages for analytics or scientific applications, such as Python, Matlab, and Labview.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Highly motivated to publish in peer-reviewed journals and present research at conferences.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in Physics, Applied Physics, Engineering, or related fields.
  • Experience in managing and executing foundry and cleanroom processes, with an understanding of process flow and simulations to inform foundry operations.
  • Extensive research experience in quantum sources, sensing, low photon detection correlation, and quantum information technology.
  • Knowledge and experience related to data processing.
  • Interest and experience in quantum communications, quantum networks, and quantum sensing.
  • Demonstrated success in proposing and securing independent research funding.
  • Experience in electronics and computer automation of laboratory experiments.
  • Familiarity with big data applications, data science, or data analytics methods and tools.
  • DoD Top Secret Clearance.
