Role of the Sustainability Science and Innovation Team

The Sustainability Science and Innovation (SSI) team is a diverse group within WWS that integrates science, analytics, economics, statistics, machine learning, product development, and engineering expertise. We utilize data across various sustainability imperatives—such as carbon, water, waste, biodiversity, and environmental risk—to identify, develop, experiment, and scale scientific solutions and innovations that assist Amazon, our customers, and partners in addressing their most pressing sustainability challenges.

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Applied Scientist to join our dynamic team. The ideal candidate will possess a broad scientific background and expertise in areas such as Generative AI, computer vision, and natural language processing (NLP). Strong communication skills are essential for fostering consensus among diverse stakeholders, along with the ability to navigate ambiguous problem spaces and take on multiple roles.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, test, deploy, and maintain cutting-edge data and machine learning solutions to enhance our business operations.
  • Create experiments and prototype new learning algorithms and predictive techniques.
  • Collaborate with scientists, engineers, product managers, and stakeholders to design and implement software solutions for scientific challenges.
  • Apply machine learning best practices to uphold high-quality standards for all team deliverables.
  • Lead the initial investigative phase of strategic sustainability initiatives, effectively influencing and communicating with stakeholders to facilitate project handoffs for implementation.

Basic Qualifications

  • 3+ years of experience in developing models for business applications.
  • PhD or Master's degree with 4+ years of experience in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Machine Learning, or a related field.
  • Experience with patents or publications in top-tier peer-reviewed conferences or journals.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Java, C++, Python, or similar.
  • Familiarity with algorithms and data structures, parsing, numerical optimization, data mining, parallel and distributed computing, and high-performance computing.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Unix/Linux environments.
  • Background in professional software development.
