Position Overview

The Leidos Innovation Center (LInC) is seeking a skilled Photonics Research Scientist specializing in Quantum Technologies. This role focuses on quantum optics and integrated photonics, and while familiarity with photonic computing hardware is advantageous, this position is not centered on quantum computing. This is a unique opportunity to leverage your expertise in advancing Leidos' portfolio in quantum technologies through various research and development initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, simulate, construct, and evaluate experiments in optics, optoelectronics, and photonics across diverse systems aimed at pioneering devices for quantum communication, sensing, and precision applications.
  • Conduct laboratory and field evaluations to validate quantum experimental theories as feasible products and benchmark findings within the industry.
  • Engage in proposal writing, academic publishing, conference participation, and presentations to both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including engineers and scientists, to harness quantum technologies for organizational objectives.

Essential Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in physics, applied physics, engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Research experience and practical expertise in areas such as quantum optics, integrated photonics, quantum entanglement, and quantum communications.
  • Proficiency in photonic design simulation tools, including Lumerical, Tidy3D, or COMSOL, along with RF circuit simulation software.
  • Experience in layout design, tapeout processes, and design rule verification.
  • Knowledge of photonic integrated circuit packaging, including fiber and electrical connections, as well as PCB design.
  • Familiarity with the design, setup, and operation of optics laboratories and photonic chip characterization.
  • Proven ability to develop innovative solutions based on diverse research findings.
  • Experience in building and assessing hardware and software prototypes, including metrics development and analytical skills.
  • Strong technical writing capabilities, particularly in drafting advanced technical proposals.
  • U.S. Citizenship with the ability to obtain and maintain a government security clearance.
  • A keen interest in learning new technologies and adaptability to shift between projects as needed.
  • Proficiency in standard programming languages for scientific applications, such as Python, Matlab, and Labview.
  • Effective communication skills for both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • A strong motivation to publish in peer-reviewed journals and present research findings at conferences.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Physics, Applied Physics, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience in managing and executing foundry and cleanroom processes, with an understanding of process flows and simulations.
  • Extensive research experience in quantum sources, sensing technologies, and quantum information systems.
  • Knowledge of data processing techniques and tools.
  • Interest and experience in quantum communications, networks, and sensing technologies.
  • Demonstrated success in securing independent research funding.
  • Experience in automating laboratory experiments through electronics and computer systems.
  • Familiarity with big data applications and data analytics methodologies.
