Senior Program Director – Supportive Housing Programs
Lantern Community Services Inc. is dedicated to promoting the autonomy and welfare of individuals in New York who are affected by or at risk of homelessness. Our organization offers innovative solutions designed to assist those who are homeless, previously homeless, or have recently transitioned out of foster care in rebuilding their lives. Our programs, which have demonstrated success in areas such as health, employment, education, and life skills, are implemented within our residences and customized to meet the unique needs of each individual.

Location: New York City Area
Position Type: This is a full-time role with a standard schedule of Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Staff may be required to adjust their schedules based on the operational needs of the organization.
Objective:
We are in search of a proactive and seasoned Senior Program Director to manage two supportive housing initiatives located in the New York City area. One facility caters to single and young adults facing mental health challenges, including those with disabilities and individuals who have experienced chronic homelessness. The second facility is designed for families, community families, and individuals dealing with substance use issues. The Senior Program Director will lead a dedicated team to support these populations in stabilizing their lives, ensuring housing security, and achieving their personalized objectives. Collaboration with the Leasing and Compliance Department and Property Management staff is also a key expectation of this role.
The ideal candidate will possess a Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW), Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC), or Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) designation, along with proven leadership experience in a supportive housing environment. Strong judgment skills are essential for effective planning and goal achievement, navigating complex bureaucratic systems, and providing robust staff supervision. Experience working with families who have previously faced homelessness, as well as those impacted by mental health issues, substance use, and medical challenges, is crucial. The Senior Program Director should also demonstrate exceptional administrative capabilities, budget management proficiency, and operational knowledge.
Key Responsibilities:
- Recruit, train, supervise, and mentor a program team, fostering a strong sense of accountability for achieving resident outcomes and adhering to Lantern and funder regulations.
- Ensure that all resident case records (both electronic and paper) are accurate, comprehensive, and current. The Program Director is responsible for monitoring staff compliance and providing necessary training and support.
- In collaboration with staff, oversee the creation and execution of program services, including group activities, community meetings, and celebrations, tailored to meet tenant and program needs.
- Provide regular supervision of staff and facilitate weekly staff and clinical meetings, offering case management support as needed.
- Identify and address training needs for staff.
- Work with Leasing and Compliance staff to screen potential clients for the program and assist with the onboarding and orientation process.
- Manage relationships with landlords to track needs, address property management issues, and handle client work orders.
- Ensure all staff promote housing stability through proactive engagement with tenants regarding budgeting and financial management.
- Assess serious incidents, evaluate incident management practices, and implement necessary corrections.
- Utilize data to ensure program objectives are met and to identify trends, both positive and challenging.
- Engage in professional development training and identify training opportunities for program staff.
- Provide monthly written reports to Senior Management as required.
- Establish connections with community organizations and law enforcement to support program initiatives.
Required Qualifications:
- LMSW/LMHC or LCSW required, SIFI certification is a plus.
- A minimum of eight years of progressive experience in supportive housing, including at least three years in a supervisory capacity as Program Director or Assistant Program Director.
- Knowledge of HIV/AIDS, mental health, substance use, and chronic homelessness is essential.
- Experience managing service contracts with agencies such as DOHMH, OMH, HASA, NYSSHIP, etc., is required.
- Familiarity with electronic case management systems and the ability to analyze data to inform best practices in service delivery.
- Ability to perform well under pressure, including in crisis situations, and flexibility in work schedule as needed.
- Experience with evidence-based models, particularly Motivational Interviewing, Individual Placement and Support (IPS), and harm reduction.
- Bilingual proficiency in Spanish and English is a plus.
Supervisory Responsibilities: Oversees Social Services Teams at both locations, including an Assistant Program Director and case managers/social workers.
Work Environment: This position operates within a supportive housing environment and involves working with individuals experiencing mental health challenges, addiction, disabilities, HIV, and other chronic illnesses.
Physical Demands: The role requires regular standing, walking, sitting, stooping, and kneeling. The employee must also use their hands for typing and handling materials. Frequent communication is necessary, and the ability to lift and/or move up to 5 pounds may be required. Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
