Sustainability Specialist

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Sustainability Specialist to join our team at the Virginia Department of Human Resource Management. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and overseeing a culture of sustainability and environmental awareness within the agency.
Key Responsibilities- Develop and manage regional recycling centers to process recyclable materials generated in the agency.
- Provide guidance and technical assistance to facilities regarding waste management to ensure proper collection, sorting, and diversion of recycling and compostable materials from landfills.
- Establish and support composting and other food-waste diversion programs at all correctional facilities.
- Develop and manage all composting permits and ensure regulatory requirements are met.
- Establish contracts for recycling services.
- Provide training to inmates, in conjunction with community partners, in waste management, recycling, and composting to support the agency's reentry initiative.
- Collect and analyze waste management data, develop trends, and establish baseline measures and goals for success.
- Promote recycling and zero-waste initiatives to internal and external stakeholders.
- Ensure pest control program operates in a safe and effective manner with an emphasis on staff training, proper chemical control, and the use of less-lethal methods by supervising the Statewide Pest Control Manager.
- High school diploma.
- Valid driver's license.
- Ability to provide own transportation to and from work.
- Knowledge of sustainability and environmental awareness.
- Experience managing composting permits and other regulatory requirements.
- Experience establishing and managing contracts for recycling services.
- Ability to assist facilities with waste management.
- Ability to train inmates in waste management and sustainability processes as they pertain to supporting the agency.
- Ability to collect and analyze data related to waste management to establish and revise goals.
- Ability to develop reports, share results, and present materials in multiple formats to a wide variety of internal and external stakeholders.
- Ability to manage pest control programs, including training staff, management of chemicals, and supervising the Statewide Pest Control Manager.
- Advanced knowledge of Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Law, or a related discipline and appropriate training and experience.
- Experience working in a correctional setting.
- Experience supervising others in a professional environmental service role.
- High-level experience in Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel.
- Possession of VCA/VCO or the ability to obtain within a reasonable timeframe.
