Schweid and Sons is in search of a Director of Food Safety and Quality Assurance. This pivotal role reports directly to the VP of Operations and Supply Chain. The successful candidate will be responsible for the advancement and execution of a comprehensive, industry-leading strategy for food safety, sanitation, quality assurance, and regulatory compliance.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Leadership in Food Safety: Develop and oversee robust food safety programs and policies. Ensure adherence to all applicable local, state, and federal regulations, including USDA and FDA standards. Spearhead the Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) and Food Safety Management System (FSMS) initiatives.
  2. Quality Assurance Oversight: Manage the creation and upkeep of quality assurance protocols. Implement and supervise quality control measures to guarantee product consistency and safety. Conduct regular audits and inspections to proactively identify and resolve potential quality concerns.
  3. Regulatory Compliance Management: Stay informed about industry trends, regulations, and best practices. Ensure all products meet or exceed regulatory and customer specifications. Cultivate relationships with regulatory bodies and third-party auditors.
  4. Team Leadership and Development: Lead, mentor, and nurture a team of food safety and quality assurance experts. Promote a culture of continuous improvement and accountability. Provide training and resources to ensure team members are well-versed in food safety standards and practices.
  5. Crisis Management: Formulate and manage crisis management and recall strategies. Lead investigations and root cause analyses for food safety incidents. Implement corrective and preventive measures to mitigate future risks.
  6. Collaboration and Communication: Collaborate closely with other departments, including production, supply chain, and R&D, to ensure seamless integration of food safety and quality initiatives. Communicate food safety and quality performance metrics to senior management and stakeholders.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in food science, microbiology, or a related discipline; a Master's degree is preferred.
  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in food safety and quality assurance, ideally within the meat or ground beef sector.
  • 8+ years of experience in food safety, quality, and regulatory roles required.
  • 4+ years of management experience required.
  • 5+ years of relevant protein experience required, with a strong preference for beef experience, particularly in ground beef.
  • Extensive knowledge of USDA, FDA, and other pertinent food safety regulations.
  • Certification in HACCP and other relevant food safety programs.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational capabilities.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a dynamic environment.
  • Experience with food safety management systems and quality assurance tools.
