Position Overview

The Virginia Community College System is dedicated to fostering educational opportunities and support for students. The Financial Aid Student Support Specialist plays a vital role in ensuring students receive the necessary financial assistance to pursue their academic goals.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Execute essential financial aid functions related to the administration of state, federal, and local financial assistance programs.
  2. Deliver exceptional customer service to both internal and external stakeholders.
  3. Act as the primary point of contact for students and guardians regarding financial aid inquiries and enrollment processes.
  4. Address inquiries received through the Financial Aid email account, manage incoming calls from students, faculty, and staff, and assist walk-in visitors with documentation.
  5. Guide students in completing their Financial Aid applications effectively.
  6. Process documentation within the Student Information System efficiently.
  7. Utilize imaging software to scan and maintain important documents.
  8. Support student communications to ensure compliance with federal regulations.
  9. Conduct outreach to students regarding verification requests.
  10. Manage the processing of student SAP appeals.
  11. Assist in organizing Financial Aid workshops and other college-related events as necessary.
  12. Perform supportive tasks to uphold office organization and workflow continuity.
  13. Undertake additional responsibilities as assigned by the Financial Aid Director.

Qualifications

Required:

  • An associate degree from an accredited institution in Administrative Support Technology or a related field.
  • A minimum of two years of office experience.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • A strong commitment to customer service.
  • Meticulous attention to detail with the ability to interpret and adhere to oral and written guidelines.
  • Proficient in computer skills, particularly with Microsoft Office applications.
  • A dedication to the community college mission and an understanding of the needs of community college students.
  • Competence in email and internet usage.

Preferred:

  • Two or more years of experience in a financial aid office at a college or university.
  • Familiarity with PeopleSoft Student Information System.

Background Check Requirement

Employment offers are contingent upon successful completion of a criminal background investigation, which may include fingerprint checks, local agency checks, employment verification, education verification, and credit checks relevant to the position.
