Overview

This role plays a crucial part in the strategizing and execution of transmission initiatives essential for maintaining a reliable and efficient transmission network that meets customer demands. The position employs engineering principles to ensure adherence to industry reliability standards.

Responsibilities include the formulation of engineering analyses, project plans, specifications, calculations, evaluations, design documentation, and performance assessments related to the planning, design, licensing, construction, operation, and upkeep of the Company's generation and transmission systems.

Key Responsibilities

The duties of the Transmission Planning Specialist include:

  • Design, develop, modify, and assess transmission systems, processes, or facilities to align with organizational goals, utilizing engineering methodologies to ensure compliance with industry reliability standards.
  • Conduct moderately complex engineering analyses, project plans, specifications, calculations, evaluations, design documentation, and performance assessments.
  • Identify methods and techniques for achieving desired outcomes.
  • Propose alternative engineering solutions to management to fulfill business requirements.
  • Ensure commitments are met and assist in managing external engineering services to complete assigned tasks.
  • Maintain project schedules and budgets.
  • Engage in the development of new industry standards to promote the successful implementation of clear and concise guidelines that enhance the reliability of the electrical system.

In addition to the responsibilities outlined above, the Senior Transmission Planning Specialist will:

  • Serve as a lead authority within the team; mentor and train junior planners, engineers, technicians, and drafters.
  • Collaborate with adjacent utilities on planning studies for interconnected transmission and generation systems.
  • Prepare annual compliance studies as required by industry standards.
  • Conduct main grid power flow stability assessments.

Furthermore, the Senior Transmission Planning Specialist II will:

  • Develop highly intricate engineering analyses, project plans, specifications, calculations, evaluations, design documentation, and performance assessments for the main grid.
Qualifications

The qualifications for the Transmission Planning Specialist include:

  • A Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • Skills in project management and leadership, including the ability to collaborate effectively, maintain project timelines, budgets, and fulfill commitments.
  • Familiarity with relevant federal, state, and local regulations, as well as the National Electric Codes.
  • Capability to perform effectively under pressure while maintaining composure.
  • Strong communication (written, verbal, and presentation) and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work cross-functionally to understand requirements and present alternatives and recommendations.
  • Proficiency in using personal computers, including automated tools and software applications for power flow and dynamic analysis, database management, and Microsoft Office Suite.

In addition to the qualifications for the Transmission Planning Specialist, the requirements for the Transmission Planning Specialist II include:

  • A minimum of two years of relevant experience in transmission modeling, transmission system engineering, and/or transmission system planning.

For the Senior Transmission Planning Specialist, the requirements include:

  • A minimum of five years of relevant experience in transmission modeling, transmission system engineering, and/or transmission system planning.

For the Senior Transmission Planning Specialist II, the requirements include:

  • A minimum of eight years of relevant experience in transmission modeling, transmission system engineering, and/or transmission system planning.
  • An advanced technical degree or professional engineer (PE) designation is required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Specialization in Power System Analysis.
  • Advanced Degree.
  • Knowledge of industry reliability standards.
