Position Overview:
This role is integral to the research initiatives within Dr. Farzad Fereidouni's laboratory, concentrating on the creation, development, and assessment of innovative devices aimed at tissue diagnostics. We are looking for a meticulous individual who is enthusiastic about merging engineering with healthcare disciplines. Strong interpersonal skills, a willingness to learn, and the capability to collaborate effectively are vital.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under general supervision, you will engage in a variety of defined research and laboratory activities that necessitate engineering expertise in accordance with established protocols.

This encompasses the integration of hardware and software for specialized laboratory apparatus and collaboration with engineering support from external companies.

You will assist in setting up and conducting experiments as directed by the principal investigator and senior laboratory staff.

It is essential to ensure that necessary supplies are procured for experimental work.


Participate in laboratory upkeep activities, including calibrating sensitive instruments, repairing electronic devices, modifying data processing scripts, ordering materials, and backing up data on servers.

Process data in accordance with established protocols utilizing specialized engineering software such as Matlab, LabView, Python, Vicon Workstation, SolidWorks, etc.

Maintain detailed records of laboratory work and manage computer databases.

Under supervision, uphold necessary certifications for conducting experiments (i.e., IRB, IACUC protocols, and other laboratory certifications).


Under guidance, develop custom computer code and scripts to implement novel data processing techniques, employing matrix algebra, calculus, differential equations, Fourier analysis, and other engineering analysis methodologies; generate corresponding graphs, tables, and data compilations as specified by the principal investigator.

Under supervision, design and fabricate electrical and/or mechanical components for research purposes.


Utilize specialized software for electrical circuit and mechanical design, fabrication of components, and/or collaboration with engineering firms to develop designs that meet specified criteria.

May assist in the preparation of grant applications and scholarly articles.

Perform additional duties as required.

Responsibilities:
Research (80%): Plan, execute, analyze, and present research projects.

Contribute to the design and validation of tissue preparation devices, mechanical design setups, software development, and analytical tasks.

Engage in scientific meetings and prepare data for publications, grant proposals, and presentations.

Co-author or acknowledge contributions in publications.

Laboratory Maintenance:
Monitor laboratory supplies, maintain a database of purchases, and inventory laboratory reagents/materials.

Adhere to standard operating procedures, maintain a tidy working environment, and assist fellow lab members.

Expectations:
Engage in publishable research activities. Participate in professional/technical societies and educational/research organizations. Review research proposals, journal manuscripts, and publications.

This position offers a unique opportunity to engage in translational technology and learn from a multidisciplinary research team.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
A bachelor's or master's degree in Biomedical Engineering or a related engineering/quantitative science field.

Completion of coursework in calculus, differential equations, and linear algebra, along with strong programming skills in Matlab/Python, is required.

Coursework in biomechanics, physiology, and/or neuroscience is preferred.

Experience in biomedical laboratory research is advantageous.

Strong organizational and communication skills, along with the ability to collaborate with a diverse, interdisciplinary team, are essential.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:


Basic understanding of systems design, integration, and testing, including the development of testbeds for tissue preparation, staining, detection, imaging, and final processing.

Familiarity with CAD, 3D design, printing, and assembly.

Basic knowledge of robotics and machine vision.

Elementary understanding of electronics.

Position tasks are generally required to be performed in-person at an Emory University location. Remote work from home day options may be granted at department discretion. Emory reserves the right to change remote work status with notice to employee.
