Atlanta, Georgia, United States Emory University Full time
Explore Your Future at Emory University

Emory University stands as a premier research institution dedicated to excellence and the cultivation of top-tier talent to drive innovation and shape future leaders.

We invite individuals who can enhance the diversity and quality of our academic environment.

Position Overview

Dr. Kathryn Oliver is on the lookout for a Biomedical Research Scientist to become a vital part of her team within the Department of Pediatrics at Emory University School of Medicine.

Dr. Oliver's research initiative focuses on the intricate roles of ribosome functionality and mRNA surveillance in the context of inherited disorders, including cystic fibrosis (CF).

Current investigations explore the potential of ribosomal suppression as a groundbreaking therapeutic approach to address persistent challenges associated with the CF transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR), particularly concerning premature termination codons and rare genetic variants.

This research encompasses a thorough mechanistic analysis of both global and transcript-specific influences on ribosome accuracy and efficiency, alongside biochemical evaluations of CFTR protein production and functionality.

These innovative and translational research projects utilize both human and murine-derived materials.

Key Responsibilities:

• Develop and implement biochemical and cell-based assays, utilizing these tools for high-throughput screening of small molecule libraries.
• Design and execute lower throughput biochemical or cell-based assays aimed at optimizing hit compounds.

• Engage as a hands-on bench scientist.

• Collaborate with biomedical researchers and medicinal chemists.

• Potentially oversee junior staff.

• Undertake related responsibilities as necessary.

Additional Job Details:

Typical laboratory activities include:
• Cell culture, nucleotide transfection, and high-resolution microscopy.

• Drug discovery methodologies, including high-throughput screening of small molecule libraries and structural optimization of lead compounds.

• Molecular biology techniques such as DNA/RNA isolation and purification; PCR amplification; qRT-PCR; gel electrophoresis; and preparation of sequencing libraries.

• Biochemical protocols, including but not limited to cytotoxicity and cell migration assays; protein quantification and visualization (e.g., western blot, protein half-life, immunoprecipitation); mRNA stability assays; and electrophysiology (short-circuit current analyses).

Processing human clinical specimens (e.g., respiratory epithelia) from CF and non-CF patients, along with various mouse tissues.

Minimum Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree with 7 years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and training.

• Strong technical expertise.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Background in synthetic, medicinal, or computational chemistry.

• Experience with biochemical and/or cell-based drug screening assays.

• Familiarity with analytical tools such as Schrödinger, GraphPad Prism, R, Microsoft Office suite, etc.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

• Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.

• Leadership skills pertinent to contemporary team-based scientific approaches.

• Ability to perform tasks effectively, collaboratively, and with integrity in a dynamic environment.

• Commitment to working with individuals from diverse backgrounds (e.g., gender, race/ethnicity, LGBTQ+, physical ability, socioeconomic status, geographic origin, etc).

Note:
• Position responsibilities are generally expected to be conducted in-person at an Emory University location. Remote work options may be available at the discretion of the department. Emory reserves the right to modify remote work status with notice to the employee.
