Position Summary
The Bridge Over Troubled Waters is seeking a dedicated Bilingual Community Advocate for Sexual Violence Prevention to tackle the underlying issues and enhance protective measures against sexual violence in the community. This role involves engaging in community organizing efforts aimed at fostering a safer environment in Pasadena and South Houston.
The Advocate will be responsible for providing training and resources to youth, community members, and professionals interested in spearheading initiatives to prevent sexual violence. Key responsibilities include:
  • Participating in local, regional, and statewide training focused on the primary prevention of sexual violence.
  • Implementing primary prevention programming, dedicating 90% of work hours to the Close to Home curriculum within the community.
  • Attending community events to strengthen partnerships and alliances with local organizations.
  • Recruiting and empowering middle and high school students to engage in meaningful discussions and actions aimed at preventing sexual violence.
  • Creating and managing program documentation tools to monitor qualitative and quantitative outcomes.
  • Planning and facilitating networking and community engagement sessions to connect individuals and promote interest in prevention programming.
  • Training and supporting project teams of community members to organize activities that promote safe and healthy social norms.
  • Assisting in the preparation of quarterly progress reports for federal grant requirements.
  • Delivering presentations on healthy relationships and related topics to youth in educational settings.
  • Providing crisis intervention services, including managing a 24-hour hotline and serving as an on-call advocate for survivors.
  • Supporting Education & Prevention Department events by coordinating logistics and resources.
  • Staying informed about current incidents of sexual and domestic violence through research and community engagement.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED preferred; experience in social work or public health is advantageous.
  • Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish is required.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Publisher.
  • Understanding of sexual violence dynamics, crisis intervention, and primary prevention strategies.
  • Ability to facilitate educational sessions and public presentations effectively.
  • Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
  • Strong written communication skills for report preparation and correspondence.
  • Knowledge of the root causes of sexual and domestic violence and ability to engage in discussions on oppression and gender socialization.
  • Conflict resolution and facilitation skills to promote common goals in group settings.
  • Familiarity with community and legal resources for assisting survivors.
  • Understanding of crisis intervention techniques.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to connect with diverse populations.
  • Ability to manage and monitor a program budget effectively.
  • Reliable transportation is necessary, with travel required for 50 to 75% of the role.

  • Successful completion of a criminal background check.
  • Passing a drug screening is mandatory.
  • Possession of a valid TX Driver's License is required.
  • Maintaining a clean driving record and updating it annually is essential.
  • Current auto liability insurance must be provided and maintained.
  • Authorization to work in the U.S. is required.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 40 lbs and navigate stairs in emergency situations.
