Position Summary
The Bridge Over Troubled Waters is looking for a dedicated Children's Advocate to deliver both individual and group support services to young survivors of domestic and sexual violence, as well as child abuse, employing a trauma-informed approach. This role involves collaborating closely with families to ensure a comprehensive and timely response that formulates a supportive service plan addressing the safety, survival, and developmental needs of the youth.
The Children's Advocate will also engage with the Casework team, Parent Educator team, Therapist team, and external agencies to provide effective services to families in our Residential Shelter and Permanent Supportive Housing programs.
The responsibilities include planning and facilitating educational and recreational activities for youth and families, as well as developing a supportive service plan using a Strengths, Needs, and Trauma Exposure Assessment tool to evaluate the youth's safety, social, emotional, physical development, and medical needs.
This position supports early childhood environments by demonstrating intervention techniques that promote social and emotional development. The Children's Advocate will prepare and orient families to the agency's programs, providing insights on the effects of domestic violence, reducing psychological trauma, and fostering structured routines.
To maintain professional expertise, the Children's Advocate will participate in educational workshops on trauma understanding, child abuse and neglect, mental health basics, legal advocacy, and program development. This role also acts as a liaison between school districts and families to ensure compliance with educational regulations, providing advocacy for 504 plans, ARD meetings, special education services, and addressing behavioral issues.
Supportive services will be provided to youth through ongoing individual sessions that address trauma exposure, psycho-educational programming, safety planning, and the development of healthy coping mechanisms. The Children's Advocate will also provide crisis intervention services by supporting a 24-hour hotline and being available for on-site advocacy at local hospitals as needed.
Required Skills & Qualifications
  • At least one (1) year of demonstrated experience in education, childcare, or case management.
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English is required.
  • Basic knowledge of childhood development.
  • Flexibility to work varied schedules, primarily Sunday through Thursday or Tuesday through Saturday, with occasional evening and weekend hours as necessary.
  • Understanding of the dynamics of domestic and sexual violence and its impact on children.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to quickly build rapport and communicate effectively with diverse populations.
  • Proficient in clear and concise documentation.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Child Development, Early Childhood Education, Public Administration, Social Work, or related fields, or equivalent experience is highly desirable.
  • High School diploma/GED with a minimum of three (3) years of experience in child advocacy is preferred.

Additional Requirements
  • Successful completion of a criminal background check.
  • Pass a drug screening.
  • Possession of a valid TX Driver's License.
  • Maintain a clean driving record and update it annually.
  • Hold current auto liability insurance.
  • Authorization to work in the U.S.
  • Physical ability to stand, bend, kneel, stretch, ascend/descend stairs, and lift/carry up to 40 lbs in an emergency shelter setting.
