Position Title: Director of Medical Services
Classification: Salary - Exempt
Reports To: Chief Executive Officer, with consultation from the Medical Director
Work Schedule: Primarily at Hiawatha Office, with occasional duties at other locations; Monday to Friday; 40 Hours
Key Responsibilities:
The Director of Medical Services is responsible for providing strategic leadership and clinical oversight to the organization and its medical services division. This role includes being an integral member of the Executive Leadership Team. The position involves supervising psychiatric prescribers and nursing personnel to ensure the delivery of high-quality and efficient patient care. The Director will oversee the administration, performance, stability, and growth of mental health and substance use medication services, which includes patient evaluations, primary care screenings, prescriptions, and monitoring patient satisfaction.
The Director will maintain a manageable patient caseload, delivering high-quality, client-centered care across a comprehensive range of outpatient psychiatric medication evaluation and management services, including Medication-Assisted Treatment for opioid use disorders (training will be provided if necessary). The patient demographic includes individuals of all ages experiencing mental health and/or substance use challenges.
Required Qualifications:
- Master's Degree in Psychiatric Nursing (PMHNP) or Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) from an accredited advanced practice program.
- Possession of a valid and unrestricted Kansas license as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) from the Kansas State Board of Nursing.
- A valid and unrestricted DEA license in Kansas is required.
- No history of suspension, exclusion, or debarment from federal health care programs such as Medicare, Medicaid, or Tricare.
- At least two years of experience in prescribing for both youth and adults.
- A minimum of two years in a leadership role with increasing responsibilities in staff supervision and management.
- Proficiency in telemedicine, electronic health records (EHR), and e-prescribing is essential.
- Maintain credentials and licensure with major insurance providers and Kansas licensing boards, with support from Kanza's credentialing team.
Essential Functions:
- Foster strong relationships with patients, staff, and community partners.
- Maintain awareness of critical patients across all service locations.
- Provide services either on-site or through telehealth as required.
- Participate in the recruitment and training of new prescribers and nursing staff as necessary.
- Ensure adequate coverage and scheduling for services.
- Assess, diagnose, and treat youth and adults facing behavioral health challenges; conduct crisis risk assessments, evaluate consent capacity, provide patient education, document progress towards treatment goals, and manage discharge planning.
- Prescribe, recommend, or discontinue medications and treatments for behavioral health disorders in accordance with clinical practice standards.
- Order laboratory tests as per clinical guidelines, review health assessments completed by nursing staff, gather past and current medical histories, perform focused physical examinations as needed, and initiate communication with primary care providers as required.
- Be available for crisis consultations with Kanza care teams as necessary.
- Document and maintain timely, thorough, and accurate treatment records in the EHR, utilizing collaborative documentation with the patient present.
- Record all services rendered for accurate billing in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations, as well as payer rules. Submit billing documents promptly.
- Adhere to strict patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA and 42 CFR Part 2.
- Other relevant duties may be assigned as necessary.
Supervisory Duties:
Oversee administrative functions for prescribers and nursing staff.
Physical Requirements:
- Frequent sitting, standing, and walking is required.
- Occasional reaching, stooping, kneeling, or crouching may be necessary.
- Extended periods of focus on computer screens are common.
- Occasional lifting of up to twenty-five pounds may be required.
Work Environment:
Kanza operates as an outpatient behavioral health center (CMHC & CCBHC).
Services may be provided from various locations, with a focus on telemedicine based on patient needs and location constraints.
Frequent travel within the community using a company vehicle may be necessary.
Work may involve exposure to potentially volatile situations, requiring effective crisis response capabilities.
Job Type: Full-time
Compensation: Starting at $130,000.00 annually
