Job Overview

Position Title: Director of Medical Services

Classification: Salary - Exempt

Reports To: Chief Executive Officer, with consultation from the Medical Director

Work Schedule: Hiawatha Office, with occasional travel to other locations; Monday-Friday; 40 Hours

Key Responsibilities:

The Director of Medical Services is responsible for providing strategic leadership and clinical oversight within the organization and the medical services department. This role involves collaboration as a member of the Executive Leadership Team. The Director will oversee psychiatric prescribers and nursing personnel to ensure the delivery of high-quality and efficient patient care.

The Director will also monitor the administration, performance, stability, and expansion of mental health and substance use medication services, which includes patient evaluations, primary care screenings, prescription management, and patient satisfaction metrics. The role requires maintaining a manageable patient caseload while delivering comprehensive, client-centered care across a spectrum of outpatient psychiatric medication evaluation and management services, including Medication-Assisted Treatment for opioid use disorders (training will be provided if necessary). The patient demographic includes individuals of all ages experiencing mental health and/or substance use challenges.

Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in Psychiatric Nursing (PMHNP) or Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) from an accredited advanced practice program.
  • Possession of a valid and unrestricted Kansas license as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) from the Kansas State Board of Nursing.
  • Valid and unrestricted DEA license in Kansas is required.
  • No history of suspension, exclusion, or debarment from federal health care programs such as Medicare, Medicaid, or Tricare.
  • A minimum of two years of experience in prescribing for both youth and adults.
  • At least two years in a leadership role with increasing responsibilities in employee supervision and management.
  • Proficiency in telemedicine, electronic health records (EHR), and electronic prescriptions is essential.
  • Maintain credentials and licensure with major insurance providers and Kansas licensing boards, with support from Kanza's credentialing team.

Essential Functions:

  • Foster strong relationships with patients, staff, and community partners.
  • Maintain awareness of critical patient cases across all locations.
  • Provide services on-site or via telehealth as necessary.
  • Participate in the recruitment and training of new prescribers and nursing staff.
  • Ensure adequate staffing and scheduling.
  • Conduct assessments, diagnoses, and treatment for youth and adults facing behavioral health challenges; perform crisis risk assessments, evaluate consent capacity, provide patient education, document treatment progress, and facilitate discharge planning.
  • Prescribe, recommend, or discontinue medications and treatments for behavioral health disorders in accordance with clinical practice standards.
  • Order laboratory tests as per clinical guidelines, review health assessments completed by nursing staff, gather comprehensive medical histories, perform focused physical examinations as needed, and liaise with primary care providers as appropriate.
  • Be available for crisis consultations with Kanza care teams as required.
  • Document and maintain accurate treatment records in the EHR, ensuring thoroughness and timeliness, including collaborative documentation with patients present.
  • Record all services rendered for accurate billing in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations, submitting billing documents promptly.
  • Uphold strict patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA and 42 CFR Part 2.
  • Other relevant duties may be assigned as necessary.

Supervisory Duties:

Administrative oversight of prescribers and nursing staff.

Physical Requirements:

  • Frequent sitting, standing, and walking are required.
  • Occasional reaching, stooping, kneeling, or crouching may be necessary.
  • Extended periods of focus on computer screens are expected.
  • Occasional lifting of up to twenty-five pounds may be required.

Work Environment:

Kanza operates as an outpatient behavioral health center (CMHC & CCBHC). Services may be provided from various locations, with telemedicine services based on patient needs. Frequent community travel using a company vehicle may be necessary. The role may involve exposure to potentially volatile situations, requiring effective crisis response capabilities.
