Job Summary

This position provides academic support to exceptional education students, including those on the autism spectrum, at the elementary level. The Support Specialist will work under general supervision to provide educational opportunities for each student within various disciplines.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provides support to selected students in resource, self-contained, and regular classroom settings.
  • Conducts small group or individual classroom activities with students based on lesson plans developed by the teacher.
  • Assists with preparation of materials for instruction, including copying/duplicating of materials, construction of bulletin boards, and grading work.
  • Performs special duties as required for meeting the unique needs of specific student populations, such as lifting physically disabled students, toileting/personal hygiene assistance, and using physical restraints or other specialized behavior management techniques.
  • Assists with routine record keeping, housekeeping, and school-wide supervision, including loading/unloading buses.
Key Job Requirements
  • Must meet one of the following requirements:
  • Hold an associate's degree or higher in any subject from a GaPSC-accepted accredited institution.
  • Have completed two (2) years of college coursework (sixty [60] semester hours or [90] quarter hours) above the remedial level with a grade of "C" or better at a GaPSC-accepted accredited institution.
  • Have passed the GACE Paraprofessional Assessment and hold a minimum of a high school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Paraprofessional experience serving school-age children is desirable.
  • Bilingual or bicultural experience is required for certain positions.
  • Makes recommendations or decisions that usually affect the classroom.
  • Must hold or be eligible for a GaPSC-issued Paraprofessional License.

Training and/or Experience
  • Training and/or experience in special needs of disabled populations, such as first aid, ability to perform a two-person lift for students as needed, or behavior management, is preferred.
Work Environment

This is a grade 16, 190-day position that starts at a step 6 and pays for experience up to a step 8.
