The Advanced Medical Lab Technician II is responsible for conducting intricate clinical analyses in designated areas such as general laboratory, Blood Bank, and Microbiology. This role encompasses all necessary tasks to ensure precise and prompt results, including quality assurance, performance enhancement, proficiency evaluations, and routine maintenance of laboratory instruments. Individuals in this position are trained to identify abnormal critical values and adhere to established protocols for informing healthcare professionals of findings. This role also includes clerical, general, and phlebotomy responsibilities essential for the smooth operation of the laboratory.

Facility Information:

CHRISTUS Spohn Hospital Corpus Christi-South is strategically located to provide comprehensive surgical and medical services to the community. The facility is equipped with 158 licensed beds and offers a wide array of healthcare services, including pediatrics, obstetrics, emergency care, and advanced diagnostic imaging. Notably, it houses a Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, allowing mothers to stay close to their premature or special needs infants.

Key Responsibilities:


• Adheres to the OneCHRISTUS Competencies, demonstrating leadership in self-management and teamwork.

• Specimen Collection and Management – proficiently collects blood samples through venipuncture or fingerstick, ensuring accurate identification and labeling; operates pneumatic tube systems; follows established protocols for specimen processing and testing, including the use of various centrifuges.

• Reporting Results – identifies discrepancies or unusual results and takes appropriate measures; communicates critical values in accordance with established policies; conducts laboratory tests in various sections, including Hematology, Urinalysis, Coagulation, Chemistry, and Microbiology; executes blood bank procedures, including crossmatching and dispensing blood products; operates automated laboratory analyzers per established guidelines.

• Quality Control – performs, analyzes, and documents quality control in compliance with relevant standards; engages in performance improvement initiatives and reports findings.

• Maintenance and Troubleshooting – conducts routine and periodic maintenance of laboratory equipment, documenting actions taken; addresses minor issues and coordinates service requests as necessary; manages inventory of supplies and reagents, ensuring compliance with expiration protocols.

• Professional Development – actively seeks opportunities for professional growth and continuing education.

• Training – assists in the onboarding and training of new staff and students in laboratory procedures.

• Compliance – adheres to CAP, AABB, CLIA, JCAHO, and OSHA regulations and standards.

• Safety Protocols – follows established safety, infection control, and hazardous materials handling procedures.

• Laboratory Information Systems – utilizes LIS and HIS systems effectively for laboratory result management.

• Competency Assessment – successfully completes annual competency evaluations by designated deadlines.

Qualifications:

A. Education and Skills

  • Associate degree or higher in clinical laboratory science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution or equivalent training and experience as per CLIA regulations.
  • Completion of a U.S. military medical laboratory procedures training course of at least 50 weeks and current military occupational specialty as a medical laboratory specialist.

OR

  • 60 semester hours or equivalent from an accredited institution, including a minimum of 24 semester hours in medical laboratory technology or science courses, with specific coursework in chemistry and biology.

AND

  • Laboratory training through an accredited clinical laboratory training program or at least three months of documented laboratory training in each specialty for high complexity testing.

B. Experience

  • No experience required for graduates of an accredited clinical laboratory training program.

OR

  • Six months of approved clinical laboratory experience, including rotations in Blood Banking, Microbiology, Chemistry, Hematology, Immunology, and Urinalysis within the last five years.

AND

  • Less than five years of experience as a Medical Laboratory Technician.

C. Licenses and Certifications

  • Certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) from ASCP, AMT, AAB, or HEW/HHS is required.
  • Current certification must be maintained if it has an expiration date.
  • State licensure may be required in certain locations.
  • New graduates must achieve Board Certification within one year of hire, where applicable.
