Position Summary:

The Substance Abuse Counselor will deliver extensive therapeutic support to individuals grappling with addiction and concurrent mental health challenges, ensuring compliance with the standards established by regulatory and accreditation organizations, as well as third-party insurers. Core Responsibilities:

Client Evaluation and Assessment:

  • Conduct ASAM assessments to ascertain the appropriateness for level of care.
  • Perform thorough biopsychosocial evaluations to assess clients' mental health, substance use, and overall well-being.
  • Evaluate for suicidal tendencies.
  • Employ standardized assessment instruments and clinical interviews to collect essential data.
  • Work collaboratively with clients to establish measurable and achievable treatment objectives.

Treatment Development and Execution:

  • Create personalized treatment strategies that cater to the distinct needs of each client.
  • Execute treatment plans utilizing evidence-based therapeutic methods.
  • Regularly review and modify treatment plans in response to client progress and evolving requirements.

Therapeutic Techniques:

  • Deliver individual, group, and family therapy sessions employing various therapeutic approaches, including but not limited to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Motivational Interviewing, and trauma-informed care.
  • Lead psychoeducational groups covering topics such as relapse prevention, coping mechanisms, and stress management.
  • Incorporate creative and experiential therapies, including art therapy, music therapy, or mindfulness practices, as suitable.

Case Coordination:

  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team, including medical personnel, social workers, and case managers, to ensure holistic care.

Crisis Management:

  • Offer immediate assistance and intervention during client crises, including suicide risk evaluations and safety planning.
  • Formulate and implement crisis intervention strategies in partnership with clients and other team members.
  • Coordinate with emergency services and other crisis response resources as necessary.

Documentation and Compliance:

  • Maintain precise and current clinical documentation required to meet and surpass standards set by regulatory and accreditation bodies, as well as third-party insurers.
  • Timely completion of progress notes, treatment plans, and discharge summaries.
  • Conduct concurrent reviews 24 hours prior to assessment.
  • Engage in regular chart reviews, audits, and quality assurance activities to ensure adherence to regulatory standards.

Education and Advocacy:

  • Inform clients and their families about substance abuse, mental health, and available treatment options.
  • Provide guidance and support regarding medication management and adherence.
  • Champion clients' rights and needs within the healthcare and social services frameworks.

Professional Growth:

  • Participate in ongoing training and professional development opportunities to remain informed about best practices and industry standards.
  • Attend workshops, conferences, and seminars related to substance abuse and mental health treatment.
  • Engage in regular clinical supervision and peer consultation to enhance clinical competencies and effectiveness.

Program Development and Assessment:

  • Assist in the creation and evaluation of therapeutic programs and services.
  • Provide insights and recommendations for program enhancement based on client outcomes and best practices.
  • Participate in research and evaluation initiatives as required.

Interpersonal Relations:

  • Maintain open lines of communication with facility staff and clinicians to ensure the quality and safety of all individuals involved in treatment.

Position Purpose:

  • The Substance Abuse Counselor, as a member of the primary care team, is responsible for delivering standardized counseling and therapy services. The Counselor will address various social needs, health conditions, and substance abuse factors while effectively collaborating with other therapists and clinical leadership.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Master's degree in Psychology, Social Work, Counseling, or a related discipline.
  • Licensure: Must possess a valid license as a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC), Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), or equivalent.
  • Experience: A minimum of 2 years of experience in substance abuse treatment or a related field.

Skills:

  • Strong therapeutic abilities with a focus on substance abuse and mental health.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Capacity to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Proficiency in electronic health record (EHR) systems.
  • Understanding of regulatory standards and guidelines.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to sit, stand, and move freely throughout the facility.
  • Occasional lifting of up to 20 pounds.
  • Able to work in a high-stress environment and manage multiple tasks safely.
