About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Director of Sustainability Integration to join our team. This position may be based in any of our offices.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead a team of sustainability professionals, including specialists, strategists, initiative champions, and market/discipline affinity group leaders, in support of sustainability services, education programs, and design integration.
  • Consult with pursuit leaders to assemble sustainable design/sustainability for RFPs, ensuring the assembly of a strong project team and appropriate pursuit approach.
  • Work with project team leadership at project initiation to set specific goals and targets, discuss team roles, assign sustainable design champions, and develop project-specific processes and analyses to guide design decisions.
  • Coordinate staffing/hiring of the sustainability specialist team to ensure project needs are met.
  • Coach and mentor sustainability specialists on performance while helping them achieve personal and professional goals.
  • Ensure project teams have access to the expertise and tools to manage the sustainable certification process and documentation.
  • Serve on the SmithGroup Design Awards Committee to ensure that our sustainability ethos is represented in design awards.
  • Manage external partner relationships, such as Architecture 2030, International Living Future Institute, USGBC, Healthy Building Network, and Carbon Leadership Forum.
  • Create sustainable design infrastructure, metrics, tools, and processes and collaborate with other leaders, teams, and modelers in implementation and accountability.
  • Be actively engaged in projects, providing technical guidance based on your knowledge of sustainability, energy modeling, daylight modeling, etc. to project team members.
  • Strengthen client relationships, identify new business opportunities, and network at industry events to drive business growth.
  • Manage internal educational programs in partnership with regional discipline leaders to meet the AIA 2030, MEP 2040, and SE 2050 Commitment.
  • In partnership with the Director of Performance Analytics, develop and implement democratized sustainability tools, resources, and training to all staff to support general expertise in sustainability topics.
Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in a relevant field, required.
  • Professional license in a field of discipline (if applicable) or certification within a professional discipline, preferred.
  • Relevant sustainability credentials, required.
  • Minimum 15 years of relevant experience in environmental sustainability, environmental management, engineering, architecture, landscape architecture, interior design, or equivalent consulting experience focused specifically on sustainability.
  • Experience in SmithGroup's core markets or related industries and corporate-level sustainability.
  • A proven integrated and holistic approach to all areas of sustainability.
  • Extensive knowledge of LEED and other relevant sustainability certification programs.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the proven ability to influence others.
  • Strong critical thinking skills and the ability to find solutions to challenges.
  • Previous experience leading teams; a record of success collaborating with multi-disciplinary teams, external stakeholders, and vendors.
What We Offer

SmithGroup's competitive compensation and benefit package is designed to meet the needs of a diverse staff. The anticipated salary range for this position is $166,000 to $208,000 annually. We may ultimately pay more or less than the anticipated salary range for this position. Additionally, an employee in this position is eligible for a performance-based bonus on an annual basis. Our comprehensive benefits include medical, dental, and vision coverage, flexible spending account options, and voluntary insurances. We provide an opportunity to invest in your future through our 401(k) program with employer matching and a continuing education reimbursement. We offer 3 weeks of paid time off within the first year of employment, with the option of purchasing additional time off, 8 paid federal holidays, and parental leave benefits. SmithGroup also promotes a healthy work/life balance for our staff, which includes an alternative work schedule that provides employees with an additional 15 days off per year (usually Fridays), as well as hybrid work options that give our team the flexibility to work within our vibrant office culture or remotely, as needed.
