Position Overview:

The Sustainability Team at SFO collaborates with various departments to integrate sustainable practices into airport operations, development, and strategic planning.

Core Focus Areas:

The sustainability efforts at SFO are concentrated on five key domains: Energy, Carbon, Waste, Health, and Water, each with ambitious 2030 objectives as outlined in SFO's latest Zero Annual Report and Strategic Plan.

To achieve net zero energy and carbon, SFO diligently monitors and consolidates utility data (including

water, gas, and electricity), greenhouse gas emissions (GHG), and advanced energy asset performance metrics, among other critical data, to support a sustainable future.


Role Responsibilities:
Identify, assess, and explore opportunities for enhancing energy performance and reducing carbon emissions across various programs, policies, and projects.

Gather, cleanse, and compile data through field investigations, SFO databases, and publicly accessible information.

Data Types Include:

electric vehicle charging, fuel consumption, vehicle miles traveled, on-site energy generation, electricity and natural gas consumption, energy savings assessments, and grant compliance tracking.

Analyze, interpret, and visually represent findings using charts, graphics, and infographics.

Compose clear and concise narratives of data, methodologies, and outcomes for inclusion in reports, memos, and presentations.

Deliver presentations both online and in-person to project teams and stakeholders.

Organize stakeholder meetings; establish agendas, prepare pre-read materials, document meeting minutes, and distribute reference materials for future use.

Collaborate independently and with colleagues in Sustainability and other departments to achieve objectives.

Investigate the relevance of new technologies, local/state/federal regulations, and grant opportunities, and communicate findings effectively.


Assist in greenhouse gas accounting utilizing the Airport Council International's Airport Carbon Emissions Report Tool (ACERT) and industry best practices for Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions.


Engage with airlines and other airport partners to gather Scope 3 emissions data, recommend emissions reduction strategies, and support implementation efforts.


Contribute to additional airport sustainability projects as required, including capital project stakeholder meetings, waste assessments, staff training, food donation initiatives, Green Business certification compliance, third-party rating systems reporting, Environmental Social Governance (ESG) reporting, campus tours, outreach events, and public inquiries.

Perform other assigned duties as outlined in the 9910 Public Service Trainee classification.

Qualifications:

Education:
A baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution is required.

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in organizing, analyzing, and managing large datasets.

Exceptional written and verbal communication abilities.

Strong organizational and analytical skills.

Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint.

Experience with web-based data management tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI, Geographic Information Systems (GIS)).

Familiarity with greenhouse gas accounting, energy conservation, and utilities reporting, tracking, performance measurement, and dashboarding.


Knowledge in commissioning, building HVAC controls, building management systems, electric vehicle chargers, life cycle assessment (LCA), and/or embodied carbon.

Ability to adapt and be flexible as project requirements and priorities evolve.
