Energy and Carbon Analyst for Sustainability Initiatives

Position Overview:

The Sustainability Team at SFO collaborates with various departments to integrate sustainable practices into airport operations, development, and strategic planning.

Core Focus Areas:

SFO's sustainability efforts revolve around five key domains: Energy, Carbon, Waste, Health, and Water, each with ambitious 2030 objectives as outlined in SFO's latest Zero Annual Report and Strategic Plan.

To achieve net zero energy and carbon emissions, SFO diligently monitors and compiles utility data (including

water, gas, and electricity), greenhouse gas emissions (GHG), and performance metrics of advanced energy assets, among other critical data, to support a sustainable future.


Role Responsibilities:
Conduct assessments to identify, define, and explore opportunities for enhancing energy performance and reducing carbon footprints across various programs, policies, and projects.

Gather, cleanse, and consolidate data through field investigations, SFO databases, and publicly accessible information.

Data Categories Include:

electric vehicle charging, fuel consumption, vehicle mileage, on-site energy generation, electricity and natural gas consumption, energy savings assessments, and tracking of grant requirements.

Analyze, interpret, and visually present findings through charts, graphics, and infographics.

Compose clear and concise documentation of data, methodologies, and outcomes for reports, memos, and presentations.

Deliver presentations both online and in-person to project teams and stakeholders.

Facilitate meetings with stakeholders; prepare agendas, create pre-read materials, document meeting minutes, and distribute reference materials for future use.

Collaborate independently and with staff across Sustainability and other departments to achieve objectives.

Investigate the relevance of new technologies, local/state/federal regulations, and grant opportunities, and communicate findings effectively.


Assist in greenhouse gas accounting utilizing the Airport Council International's Airport Carbon Emissions Report Tool (ACERT) and adhere to industry best practices for Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions.


Engage with airlines and other airport stakeholders to gather Scope 3 emissions data, propose reduction strategies, and support implementation efforts.


Contribute to additional airport sustainability projects as needed, including stakeholder meetings for capital projects, waste assessments, staff training, food donation initiatives, Green Business certification, compliance reporting, Environmental Social Governance (ESG) reporting, campus tours, outreach events, and public inquiries.

Perform other assigned duties as specified in the 9910 Public Service Trainee classification.

Qualifications:

Education:
A baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution is required.

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in organizing, analyzing, and manipulating extensive data sets.

Exceptional written and verbal communication abilities.

Strong organizational and analytical skills.

Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint.

Experience with web-based data management tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI, Geographic Information Systems (GIS)).

Knowledge of greenhouse gas accounting, energy conservation, and utilities reporting, including performance measurement and dashboarding.


Familiarity with commissioning, building HVAC controls, building management systems, electric vehicle charging infrastructure, life cycle assessment (LCA), and/or embodied carbon.

Ability to adapt to changing project needs and priorities.

Transportation Security Clearance:


Candidates for employment with the San Francisco Airport Commission must undergo a criminal history record check, including FBI fingerprints, and Security Threat Assessment to determine eligibility for security clearance.
