Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Script Clearance Manager to join our team at Sony Pictures Entertainment. As a key member of our Intellectual Property Department, you will be responsible for managing multiple television, film, and virtual reality projects from pre-production through release, ensuring that all intellectual property issues are identified, addressed, and resolved.

Key Responsibilities
  • Project Management: Independently manage multiple projects, overseeing clearance activities, and ensuring timely completion of tasks.
  • Team Supervision: Directly supervise two Clearance Analysts and a Script Clearance Coordinator, providing guidance and support to ensure the success of the team.
  • Intellectual Property Expertise: Utilize expertise in US and worldwide copyright laws, public domain criteria, and complex legal concepts such as fair use, right of publicity, defamation, and false association to identify and assess key legal issues.
  • Communication and Negotiation: Effectively communicate with high-level production and studio executives, negotiating key legal agreements, and resolving complicated clearance issues under tight deadlines.
  • Research and Analysis: Conduct thorough research, analyzing information from US Trademark, Hoovers, and WIPO databases to identify potential issues and provide recommendations.
  • Policy Development: Aid in the development of department policy and contribute to the structural growth of the department.
Requirements
  • 8-10 years of script clearance experience
  • 8-10 years of experience in the entertainment industry
  • 8-10 years of experience managing a team
  • Bachelor's degree preferred
Knowledge and Skills
  • Strong understanding of US and worldwide copyright laws and public domain criteria
  • Expertise in complex legal concepts such as fair use, right of publicity, defamation, and false association
  • Proficient in using and analyzing information from US Trademark, Hoovers, and WIPO databases
  • Excellent negotiation and communication skills
  • Ability to mentor and teach junior members of the department

Compensation and Benefits

The anticipated base salary for this position is $90,000 - $108,000. This role may also qualify for annual incentive and/or comprehensive benefits. The actual base salary offered will depend on a variety of factors, including without limitation, the qualifications of the individual applicant for the position, years of relevant experience, level of education attained, certifications or other professional licenses held, and if applicable, the location of the position.
