About the Job

This position is located within the University of Minnesota's Health Services department, which is part of the Student Life division. The Director of Counseling will provide leadership, administration, consultation, and supervision of the counseling section, including six counselors and support staff. The role will also serve as a liaison to the campus and community mental health programs.

The Director of Counseling will be responsible for providing counseling services to UMD students, including assessment, diagnosis, and treatment. They will also provide crisis response intervention and consultation to students, staff, and faculty as needed. Additionally, the Director will participate in training and supervision of Masters in Social Work practicum students and provide consultation to medical staff, faculty, administration, parents, and students.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provides direct counseling and psychotherapy services to UMD students
  • Manages crisis response intervention and provides consultation to students, staff, and faculty
  • Supervises the counseling section, including recruiting, orienting, and establishing workloads for staff
  • Develops and implements mental health outreach education programs
  • Coordinates and participates in research program development and implementation
Requirements
  • BA/BS degree plus at least eight years of experience or an advanced degree plus at least five years of experience
  • Supervisory experience and social work licensure required
  • Preferred qualifications include college health experience, ability to develop community contacts, budget experience, and electronic medical record experience
