About the Job

The University of Minnesota seeks an experienced professional to serve as the Assistant Director for American Indian Student Success in the American Indian Learning Resource Center (AILRC). This is a full-time, regular position with a minimum annual salary of $54,500.

The Assistant Director will work with the Director to lead and manage programs and projects that support American Indian students' educational attainment and retention. This includes developing and implementing culturally relevant programming, advising and educating admissions staff on recruitment strategies, and advocating for American Indian students across the university.

The ideal candidate will have a strong commitment to equity and inclusivity, experience working with diverse populations, and knowledge of tribal sovereignty and self-governance. A master's degree in a related field and two or more years of experience counseling or advising American Indian students in higher education are preferred.

The AILRC is a welcoming place for American Indian and non-indigenous students, staff, faculty, and community members. The center offers a range of services, including secondary advising, scholarship opportunities, ITSS computer labs, work-study employment, cultural programming, and student leadership opportunities.

  • Develop and implement culturally relevant programming to support American Indian students' educational attainment and retention.
  • Advise and educate admissions staff on recruitment strategies for American Indian students.
  • Advocate for American Indian students across the university.
  • Work with the Director to coordinate and supervise daily operations of the AILRC.
  • Manage overall grant efforts for the Minnesota Indian Teacher Training Program (MITTP) and student retention activities.

Qualifications

  • BA/BS degree from an accredited University, with at least 4 years of relevant professional experience, or master's degree plus at least two years of relevant experience.
  • Knowledge of tribal sovereignty and self-governance.
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity and inclusivity and engagement with diverse populations.
  • Ability to travel within the Duluth area and to other regional locations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Masters degree in American Indian studies, Student Affairs, Education, or related field.
  • Two or more years of experience counseling/advising AI/AN students in higher education.
  • Knowledge and experience with college programs, higher education systems, policies and procedures.

About the Department

The American Indian Learning Resource Center (AILRC) is housed in the College of Education and Human Services Professions (CEHSP). The center exists to support American Indian & Alaska Native students as they take charge of their educational experience and succeed in their college journey.

The AILRC offers campus-wide student support services to students which include: Secondary Advising, Scholarship opportunities, ITSS computer labs, Work Study employment, cultural programming and student leadership opportunities.
