Job Overview

Position Title: Park Ranger

Objective: To function as a law enforcement representative ensuring the safety, security, and enjoyment of park visitors. Engage in essential maintenance tasks to uphold the cleanliness and safety of park facilities.

Employment Type: Hourly, Regular, Non-exempt, Full-time

Salary: $32.593 per hour, commensurate with experience. Both employer and employee contribute to the Public Employees Retirement System. Benefits include paid time off, life insurance, and comprehensive health coverage including dental, optical, and prescription plans.

Reports To: Chief of Rangers or Patrol Supervisor

Direct Reports: None

Key Responsibilities:

  • Act as a Law Enforcement Officer; monitor communications, operate mobile data terminals, patrol park areas, respond to inquiries from the public, issue citations, and prepare necessary documentation for legal proceedings, secure crime scenes, and transport detainees. Serve as the initial responder to incidents.
  • Manage park access; secure and alarm all facilities.
  • Oversee adjacent properties to the park.
  • Collaborate with other law enforcement entities.
  • Assist park visitors with emergencies such as lockouts or lost children, and respond to traffic incidents.
  • Support river rescue operations.
  • Provide information and assistance to park guests as required.
  • Address wildlife and animal-related calls; enforce regulations to protect wildlife.
  • Participate in ongoing police training to maintain current knowledge and skills.
  • Represent the Park District in legal settings as necessary.
  • Conduct traffic management duties; operate radar equipment.
  • Assist in facility maintenance, including litter collection and waste removal.
  • Maintain park vehicles; perform routine maintenance and repairs.
  • Keep a personal patrol log.
  • Offer guidance and training to seasonal staff as needed.
  • Participate in storm recovery efforts, landscaping, and forestry tasks such as tree trimming and planting.
  • Administer first aid and operate automated external defibrillators (AED).
  • Assist with maintenance and construction projects (carpentry, electrical work, plumbing, masonry, painting, etc.).
  • Procure necessary supplies.
  • Utilize power tools effectively.
  • Operate heavy machinery such as backhoes and dump trucks as required.
  • Manage snow and ice removal operations as necessary.
  • Engage in land management and natural resource activities.
  • Conduct safety education programs for schools and represent the Park District at community events.
  • Support Metropark initiatives as needed.
  • Encourage adherence to safety regulations.
  • Provide assistance to staff as required.
  • Oversee the work of Metroparks and volunteer personnel as necessary.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the Park District.

Equipment Utilized: Police radios, mobile phones, computers; chainsaws, power tools, Tasers, OC spray, firearms, park vehicles, and heavy machinery including skid steers, snow plows, dump trucks, and tractors.

Minimum Qualifications:

Alternatives to the following qualifications may be considered as deemed appropriate by Metroparks.

Education: High School Diploma or equivalent. Must be a certified Peace Officer in the State of Ohio.

Experience: Relevant experience comparable to the outlined duties and responsibilities.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Must be at least 21 years old and possess a valid driver's license with a satisfactory driving record.
  • Strong customer service abilities.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; demonstrated empathy and sensitivity.
  • Effective oral communication and presentation skills.
  • General understanding of natural resources and environmental issues.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Certification in First Aid/CPR and AED is required.
  • Proficient in computer applications including word processing and data entry.
  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting capabilities.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in operating hand and power tools.

Working Conditions/Physical Demands:

  • Work schedule: 40 hours per week, including weekends, holidays, and evenings.
  • Regularly assigned to various Metroparks but may be required to work in any park location.
  • Physical agility is necessary to perform law enforcement duties and minor maintenance tasks.
