Job Overview

POSITION TITLE: Natural Resources Conservation Assistant

OBJECTIVE: To enhance the preservation of natural resources by supporting the eradication of invasive species through both mechanical and chemical methods, aiding in prescribed fire initiatives, and contributing to native seed cultivation. Team members will assist in executing restoration management within the Metroparks and on associated properties.

CLASSIFICATION: Hourly/Seasonal

SALARY: $14.00 per hour. Contributions to the Public Employees Retirement System are made by both employer and employee.

SUPERVISION: Reports to the Natural Resources Manager, Natural Resources Supervisor, or Nursery Crew Leader.

DIRECT REPORTS: None

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conduct natural resource restoration tasks including the removal and management of invasive flora and dead or dying trees, brush clearance, wood chipping, and environmental cleanup.
  • Execute basic tree felling tasks (less than 12" diameter); utilize chainsaws for cutting trees and brush.
  • Perform routine maintenance on power tools, wood chippers, and vehicles.
  • Participate as a member of the burn crew during ecological prescribed burns, assisting in fire management operations.
  • Procure materials with supervisor consent.
  • Safely operate park vehicles between assignments and on park trails and roadways.
  • Utilize equipment such as ATVs, tractors, and dump trucks.
  • Manage invasive species by applying pesticides and herbicides to designated plant species under the guidance of a licensed applicator.
  • Engage in field maintenance and seed production tasks including weeding, irrigation, seed collection, processing, harvesting, and storage.
  • Assist in plant propagation activities.
  • Maintain tools, vehicles, and equipment utilized in management tasks.
  • Document workday data and input into the restoration activity database using Trimble data logger and/or computerized systems.
  • Adhere to all safety regulations and protocols.
  • Assist in training new employees in similar roles by demonstrating tasks and providing information.
  • Keep supervisors informed about work progress and any potential issues.
  • Attend training sessions, meetings, and workshops to acquire new skills and stay updated on Metropark communications.
  • Respond to inquiries from the public in a courteous and timely manner.
  • Maintain a professional appearance at work.
  • Utilize computers with standard software applications for email communication and data entry.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Park District.

EQUIPMENT UTILIZED: Service and utility vehicles, mowers, power and hand tools, safety gear, tractors, tillers, trailers, chainsaws, wood chippers, herbicide application equipment, computers, GPS devices.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Alternatives to the following qualifications may be considered as deemed appropriate by Metroparks.

Education: High School Diploma or equivalent; preferred background includes training or coursework in environmental sciences or natural resource management.

Experience: Some experience in outdoor work related to natural systems, forestry, or horticulture is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Must be at least 18 years old and possess a valid driver's license with a satisfactory driving record.
  • Basic understanding of operational procedures for power equipment such as chainsaws, mowers, wood chippers, and blowers; ability to operate and maintain various equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Ability to identify plant and animal species necessary for management activities.
  • Some familiarity with natural systems and conservation methodologies.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Able to comprehend and follow oral and written instructions from supervisors and colleagues.
  • Ability to apply logical and creative thinking to solve problems.
  • Willingness to support the mission, principles, goals, and objectives of Metroparks.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with others and work as part of a team.
  • Capability to perform a diverse range of duties with speed and accuracy under deadline pressure.
  • Ability to successfully complete chainsaw training and obtain Qualified Sawyer Certification provided by Metroparks.
  • Basic computer skills with knowledge of common software applications and data entry capabilities.
  • Able to read maps and learn to operate GPS devices.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Work schedule: Up to 40 hours per week; one weekend day may be required.
  • Employment duration varies based on operational needs.
  • Extensive outdoor physical labor in varying weather conditions, exposure to insects, dust, pollen, and potential hazards associated with prescribed fires and herbicides.
  • Physical requirements include frequent lifting of up to 50 lbs., occasional lifting of up to 75 lbs. with assistance, and the ability to navigate uneven terrain while carrying equipment.
  • Work locations may vary across different Metroparks.
