Job Overview

POSITION TITLE: Natural Resources Conservation Assistant

OBJECTIVE: To enhance the preservation of natural resources by aiding in the eradication of invasive flora through both mechanical and chemical methods, supporting prescribed fire initiatives, and engaging in native seed cultivation. Team members in the Natural Resources division will contribute to the execution of restoration management across park areas.

CLASSIFICATION: Hourly/Seasonal

PAY RATE: $14.00 per hour. Contributions to the Public Employees Retirement System are made by both employer and employee.

SUPERVISION: Reports to the Natural Resources Manager, Natural Resources Supervisor, or Nursery Crew Leader.

DIRECT REPORTS: None

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conduct restoration activities for natural resources, including the removal and management of invasive vegetation and the clearing of dead or dying trees.
  • Perform basic tree cutting tasks (up to 12 inches in diameter) using chainsaws.
  • Maintain power equipment, wood chippers, and vehicles in good working order.
  • Participate as a member of the burn crew during ecological prescribed burns.
  • Procure materials with prior approval from a supervisor.
  • Safely operate park vehicles between work sites and along park pathways.
  • Utilize equipment such as ATVs, tractors, and dump trucks.
  • Manage invasive species by applying pesticides and herbicides under the guidance of a licensed applicator.
  • Engage in field maintenance and seed production activities, including weeding, irrigation, seed collection, processing, harvesting, and storage.
  • Support plant propagation efforts.
  • Ensure tools, vehicles, and equipment used in management tasks are well-maintained.
  • Document workday data and input it into the restoration activity database using Trimble data loggers or computerized systems.
  • Adhere to all safety protocols and regulations.
  • Assist in training new employees by demonstrating tasks and providing relevant information.
  • Keep supervisors informed about work progress and any potential issues.
  • Attend training sessions, meetings, and workshops to acquire new skills and stay updated on communication within the Metroparks.
  • Respond to inquiries from the public in a professional and timely manner.
  • Maintain a professional appearance at work.
  • Utilize computers for email communication and data entry.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Park District.

EQUIPMENT UTILIZED: Service vehicles, mowers, power tools, safety gear, tractors, tillers, trailers, chainsaws, wood chippers, herbicide application equipment, computers, and GPS devices.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Alternatives to the following qualifications may be considered as deemed appropriate by Metroparks.

Education: High School Diploma or equivalent; coursework or training in environmental sciences or natural resource management is preferred.

Experience: Some background in outdoor work related to natural systems, forestry, or horticulture is preferred.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Must be at least 18 years old and possess a valid driver's license with a satisfactory driving record.
  • Basic knowledge of operating procedures for power equipment such as chainsaws, mowers, and wood chippers; ability to operate and maintain various equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Ability to identify plant and animal species necessary for management tasks.
  • Some understanding of natural systems and conservation methodologies.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Able to comprehend and follow oral and written instructions from supervisors and colleagues.
  • Ability to apply logical and creative thinking to problem-solving.
  • Willingness to support the mission and objectives of Metroparks.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with team members.
  • Capacity to manage a diverse range of tasks efficiently under pressure.
  • Ability to complete chainsaw training and achieve Qualified Sawyer Certification provided by Metroparks.
  • Basic computer skills, including familiarity with common software and data entry.
  • Ability to read maps and operate GPS equipment.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work schedule: Up to 40 hours per week; may include weekend shifts.
  • Employment duration varies based on operational needs.
  • Involves extensive outdoor physical labor in varying weather conditions, including exposure to insects, dust, and herbicides.
  • Physical demands include lifting up to 50 lbs. frequently, with occasional lifting of heavier items with assistance. Must navigate uneven terrain while carrying equipment.
  • Work locations may vary across various Metroparks.
