Job Title: Biosafety Officer/Biosafety Coordinator

Join the State of Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment as a Biosafety Officer/Biosafety Coordinator. This role is responsible for providing support and coordinating the Laboratory Response Network (LRN) testing activities of the Division by serving as the Assistant Bioterrorism (BT) Coordinator and as an Alternate Responsible Official (ARO) for the CDC/USDA Select Agent Program.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop and coordinate a safety program for the Division to ensure safe laboratory practice and protect the safety of laboratory staff, visitors, and the community.
  • Educate, train, and provide guidance to in-house staff on performing biosafety risk assessments, using personal protective equipment (PPE), implementing decontamination procedures, packaging and shipping of infectious agents, and reviewing waste management plans.
  • Coordinate with in-house staff to conduct outreach to public and private Sentinel clinical laboratories in jurisdiction to assist with performing biosafety risk assessments, using personal protective equipment (PPE), implementing decontamination procedures, packaging and shipping of infectious agents, and reviewing waste management plans.
  • Encourage a culture of safety and reporting of actual and potential safety issues which may place staff and others at risk; assess those risks; and implement redundant systems to keep risks to the absolute minimum.
Requirements:
  • Minimum Qualifications: Six (6) years of relevant experience in a laboratory setting facilitating, organizing, and conducting high-complexity testing and analyses of select agent specimens in participation with the CDC LRN for the timely detection performing molecular-based diagnostic, research, or regulated microbiological testing.
  • Preferred Qualifications: ASCP MLS with high volume experience in Microbiology (Parasitology and Mycology specifically) and LDT validations, Graduate degree in microbiology or molecular biology, or extensive experience in a regulated molecular diagnostic testing laboratory.
