Position Overview

The Chief Underwriting Officer (CUO) for North America Specialty is a pivotal and high-visibility leadership role within Global Risk Solutions (GRS) North America Underwriting (UW). This position reports directly to both the CUO of North America and the President of North America Specialty. The CUO will be responsible for formulating and executing underwriting strategies, establishing a clear and consistent appetite for risk, identifying avenues for growth, devising reinsurance strategies, and collaborating with North America and Global Office of Underwriting stakeholders to define the target portfolio.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develops sub-segment underwriting strategies and annual financial objectives in alignment with upstream GRS NA and sub-segment plans.
  • Formulates reinsurance strategies for the sub-segment in partnership with the GRS NA CUOs.
  • Establishes pricing, risk origination, market segmentation, and risk selection strategies while monitoring performance.
  • Ensures quality assurance activities are executed within the segment, adhering to the central framework set by the NA Office of Underwriting.
  • Defines authority limits and referral criteria at the sub-segment level, cascading down within the GRS NA CUO's framework.
  • Oversees the execution of sub-segment underwriting strategies and evaluates portfolio performance against established plans; addresses escalated referrals.
  • Tracks market developments and risk environments that may affect sub-segment portfolio performance, creating action plans for identified risks and opportunities.
  • Fosters effective cross-functional collaboration and support with sub-segment functional teams.
  • Provides strong leadership to enhance sub-segment underwriting talent through training, development, and recruitment initiatives.
  • Identifies sub-segment underwriting investment requirements to ensure effective monitoring and execution, including data strategy, advanced analytics, technology, and talent acquisition.

Qualifications
  • A minimum of 15 years of experience in specialty underwriting, property and casualty, with a focus on managing underwriting teams.
  • Experience in relevant markets, possessing knowledge of sales and distribution channels. Expertise in product, pricing, and underwriting within Commercial & Specialty Lines.
  • Responsible for managing company underwriting results to meet corporate profitability goals. Proven experience in delivering innovative underwriting solutions.
  • A history of challenging the status quo with robust technical underwriting expertise.
  • Experience in relevant markets, with a solid understanding of sales and distribution channels. A results-oriented leader with a strategic mindset and demonstrated relationship-building skills. Strong discipline, solid decision-making abilities, and advanced technical capabilities. Ability to develop strategies across portfolios and establish authority limits to define operational parameters.
