Position Overview

The Chief Underwriting Officer (CUO) for North America Specialty plays a pivotal role within the Global Risk Solutions (GRS) framework, overseeing North America Underwriting (UW) leadership. This position reports directly to both the CUO of North America and the President of North America Specialty. The CUO is responsible for the formulation and implementation of underwriting strategies, establishing a clear and consistent appetite, identifying avenues for growth, developing reinsurance strategies, and collaborating with North America and Global Office of Underwriting partners to define the target portfolio.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develops sub-segment underwriting strategies and annual financial objectives, aligned with overarching GRS NA and sub-segment plans.
  • Formulates reinsurance strategies for the sub-segment in collaboration with the GRS NA CUOs.
  • Oversees pricing strategies, risk origination, market segmentation, and risk selection performance.
  • Ensures quality assurance activities are executed within the segment, adhering to the central framework established by the NA Office of Underwriting.
  • Establishes authority limits and referral criteria at the sub-segment level, cascading within the overall GRS NA CUO framework.
  • Monitors the execution of sub-segment underwriting strategies and portfolio performance against established plans; addresses escalated referrals.
  • Tracks market developments and risk environments that may affect sub-segment portfolio performance, creating action plans for identified risks and opportunities.
  • Fosters effective cross-functional collaboration and support with sub-segment functional teams.
  • Provides strong leadership to enhance sub-segment underwriting talent through training, development, and recruitment initiatives.
  • Identifies sub-segment underwriting investment needs to ensure effective monitoring and execution, including data capture strategies, advanced analytics, technology, and talent acquisition.

Qualifications
  • A minimum of 15 years of experience in specialty underwriting, property and casualty, with a focus on managing a team of underwriters.
  • Experience in relevant markets, with a solid understanding of sales and distribution channels. Expertise in product, pricing, and underwriting within Commercial & Specialty Lines.
  • Accountable for managing company underwriting results to achieve corporate profitability, with a history of providing innovative underwriting solutions.
  • A proven track record of challenging the status quo with strong technical underwriting expertise.
  • Demonstrated experience in relevant markets, with knowledge of sales and distribution channels. An objective and results-driven leader with a strategic mindset and strong relationship-building skills. Exhibits strong discipline and decision-making capabilities coupled with robust technical expertise. Ability to formulate strategies across portfolios and establish authority parameters based on strategic objectives.
