Position Overview

The Chief Underwriting Officer (CUO) for North America Specialty plays a pivotal and high-visibility role within the Global Risk Solutions (GRS) North America Underwriting (UW) leadership team, reporting to both the CUO of North America and the President of North America Specialty. This position is responsible for the formulation and implementation of underwriting strategies, establishing a clear and consistent appetite, identifying avenues for growth, devising reinsurance strategies, and collaborating with North America and Global Office of Underwriting partners to define the target portfolio.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develops sub-segment underwriting strategies and annual financial objectives, in alignment with GRS NA and sub-segment strategies.
  • Formulates reinsurance strategies for the sub-segment in collaboration with the GRS NA CUOs.
  • Establishes strategies and oversees the performance of pricing, risk origination, market segmentation, and risk selection plans.
  • Ensures the execution and delivery of quality assurance activities within the segment, adhering to the central framework set by the NA Office of Underwriting.
  • Defines authority limits and referral criteria at the sub-segment level, cascading within the overall GRS NA CUO framework.
  • Monitors the execution of sub-segment underwriting strategies and portfolio performance against established plans; addresses any escalated referrals.
  • Tracks developments in relevant markets and risk environments that may affect sub-segment portfolio performance, establishing action plans for identified risks and opportunities.
  • Fosters effective cross-functional collaboration and support with sub-segment functional teams.
  • Provides strong leadership to enhance sub-segment underwriting talent through training, development, and recruitment initiatives.
  • Identifies sub-segment underwriting investment needs to ensure effective monitoring and execution, including data capture, advanced analytics, technology, and talent acquisition.

Qualifications
  • A minimum of 15 years of experience in specialty underwriting, property and casualty, with a track record of managing a team of underwriters.
  • Experience in relevant markets, with a solid understanding of sales and distribution channels. Expertise in product, pricing, and underwriting within Commercial & Specialty Lines.
  • Accountable for managing company underwriting results to achieve corporate profitability. Proven experience in delivering innovative underwriting solutions.
  • A history of challenging the status quo with strong technical underwriting expertise.
  • Experience in relevant markets, with knowledge of sales and distribution channels. A results-oriented leader with a strategic mindset and strong relationship-building skills. Demonstrates discipline and solid decision-making capabilities, coupled with robust technical skills. Ability to formulate strategies across portfolios and define authority limits based on strategic objectives.
