REPORTS TO: Associate Vice President of Philanthropy

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Coordinator of Volunteer Initiatives is responsible for guiding, organizing, and facilitating the Symphony Volunteer Association (SVA) in the planning, execution, and assessment of all SVA activities. This role acts as the primary link between the SVA, its members, and various departments within the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra (SLSO). The Coordinator should possess a strong enthusiasm for volunteerism, be an effective recruiter, advocate, and a skilled organizer. This position collaborates extensively with the entire SLSO team to create exceptional volunteer experiences.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead, advise, and manage all facets of the SVA, in collaboration with the SVA President and Executive Committee, including volunteer support for concerts, educational initiatives, and other SLSO events.
  • Act as the main liaison between the SVA and SLSO staff.
  • Support the SLSO Philanthropy team in identifying SVA members as potential donors and facilitate appropriate connections.
  • Assist in the stewardship of SVA donors as necessary.
  • Plan and manage the budget for the SVA.
  • Provide assistance to other areas of the Philanthropy team as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge: Proficient understanding of volunteer-driven philanthropy programs, database management, and broad-based solicitation strategies including direct mail. Familiarity with development and office software, social media, and marketing tools is essential. Experience with Wufoo or similar platforms for meetings, events, and volunteer sign-ups is preferred.

Experience: A minimum of 5 years of comprehensive fundraising or membership experience (or equivalent) along with experience working with volunteers in a dynamic environment. The candidate must demonstrate sound judgment, diplomacy, and relationship management skills to achieve defined objectives. A strong background in supervision or employee relations is also required.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to apply considerable judgment to solve problems and navigate various variables.
  • Capacity to handle confidential information responsibly.
  • Highly organized with a keen attention to detail.
  • Excellent public speaking skills for both in-person and virtual engagements.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders, influencing individuals across various levels with a high degree of diplomacy.
  • Proficient in computer skills and software applications (Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel & Access, PowerPoint).
  • Able to manage multiple projects simultaneously from inception to completion.
  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule to accommodate Philanthropy and SVA meetings and events, including evenings and weekends.
  • A genuine passion for the arts and a commitment to the mission of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra. Knowledge of orchestral music and the performing arts is preferred.

This position is part-time and offers compensation based on experience and qualifications.

About the SVA:

The Symphony Volunteer Association has a rich history dating back to 1904. Initially focused on fundraising, the SVA has recently shifted its volunteer efforts towards stewardship and education. Today, the SVA continues to pursue significant goals in stewardship, ambassadorship, and education, looking forward to expanding its membership as part of the Friends of the Symphony. Volunteers engage in various projects that support the mission of the SLSO: enriching lives through the power of music.
